From a bit of Internet searching, it appears to me that both the Echo and the Yaris share the same 1.5L 4-cylinder engine (2NZ-FE).

As far as oil recommendations, I'd suggest sticking to what the manufacturer recommends (likely to be either 5W-30 or 5W-20). Sticking to less than 5,000 mile intervals (what is the manufacturer recommended OCI?), I'd likely run a conventional oil such as Havoline, Pennzoil, Castrol GTX, Motorcraft, or Trop-Artic.

Mobil 1 and Toyota engines seem to do really well together!

And, as an added benefit, your friend will not have to change his/her oil as often as dino oil, and they'll get better gas mileage!

After searching on "synthetics" I think the consensus is that you can have longer OCI's, but don't expect better mpg.

Forgive me, but, what is a Yaris? I first thought (with echo mentioned) it was a weedeater.

What are you talking about???? Does Toytoa say that in there owner manual? If they do I have bridge to sell them.

I like Mobil 1 in my Saturn. It just seems to run better. As far as the sludge prone engines, they were the 3.0 V-6 1997-2001 and the 2.2L 4 1997 1997-2001. Their is more detailed info at Consumer Reports. Do a search there for sludge. They have a free article listing all the engines in question.

I have a Toyota Echo(2001)with 130k commuter miles on it. I have used M1 5w30 since the first oil change. I did try GC once and didn't like it. Now that I sold my car that I used GC in, I am going to use 2qts of GC and 1.75qts of M1 5w20 and give that a try. If I didn't have a good stash of different oils, I would use M1 5w30 or 5w20, whichever Toyota calls for at 7.5k OCI's, at least for the warranty period.

A friend just purchased a 07 Yaris. Does it share the same engine as the ECHO? Should he expect any sludge problems?

What's a good oil recommendation for the Yaris?

Toyota Yaris, a $14,000 "economobile"...

Since the Manual and Warranty needs 5k or 6 month Oil changes (which ever comes first),

I'd run a good SM Conventional oil like Pennzoil, Halovine, Castrol GTX or such in 5w-30 and enjoy life.

I don't think that motor *yet* is going to 5w-20

There is no difference in MPG between Syn or dino or blends (less than a mpg I've found in 52+k miles in my Corolla) and cost per oil change is alot less with Conventional.

No sludge problems with that motor.

Take care, Bill
