Chevron Supreme 5w-20 is 3.5.

Since when? Both are ILSAC 20s, and won't have an HTHS of anywhere near that. Their ILSAC 30s won't either.

Given that 2.9 is the "natural" HTHS for a 20 grade (in the wild), before the J300 minimums that came about due to polymer filled multigrades not living up to their viscosity promise in the 70s, there are plenty.
20W20 will have an HTHS of 2.9, and be shear stable about it.

In the science and technology section, there's an article examining the wear of diesel engines on 30 and 20 grade viscosities, where tehy maufactured a 20 with an HTHS of 3.5 to demonstrate that it was the HTHS, not the KV grade that protected that engine from wear.
Member bobbydavro has stated that he's made some 20s with 3.5 in the lab.
Joe90_guy has similarly said that a VI free 10W20 could be made (which by logical inference would be around 2.9)

If one discounts the chain store sales, and the Wal Mart 5 gallon jugs, most of the big name brand, on the shelf synthetics at regular retail prices are not all that much less costly than Red Line's street oils.

That must be it. Their data sheets certainly wouldn't show anything like that, so someone led you astray.
