Hi, all --

I know this has been discussed with Purolators, as their website states not to use with motorcycles (but they seem to be OK). Would you use a Fram Xtended Guard with a motorcycle (2007 FZ6)? I can't find the max flow rate anywhere online ...

If not the XG7317, would you use the Supertech ST7317?

Thanks!
Andy

I don't know about the fram xtended guard on montorcycles, I'm running wix/napa on my bike now. There is a guy w/ a cbr 600 w/ over 200k miles on it running it on mobil 1 and rotella w/ pureone filters, so I think the site is just marketing to get you to buy their motorcycle filters which they don't even make from what I've read. Plenty of guys w/ sport bikes run pureone's w/o issue and I'm probably gonna join them when my next oil change comes around.

My thoughts too. Typically, motorcycle engine oil pumps will not put out as much volume as a car's oil pump (meaning the filter's pressure drop will be less on the bike), so I see no reason why a car oil filter wouldn't work if the bypass setting is close and the fitment is good. Also, motorcycle oiling systems typically put out about the same max pressure as a car's, so I see no reason why Purolator thinks it could cause a problem, except for low motorcycle filter sales.

I figured this was the crux of my question -- do motorcycles pump as much/more oil than a car? I tried to find the flow rates of the FZ6, but couldn't -- perhaps I don't know what to look for. Anyway, thanks for answering that one!

I haven't seen any flow numbers, but I'd bet a bike's oil pump doesn't put out as much as a typical car's pump - even though a bike's engine revs much higher. That's why most bikes have a relatively small sized oil filter compared to a typical car engine ... because the oil flow volume isn't as large as the car's.

I don't know about that. My Harley holds almost 1 gallon of oil, and so does my wife's Kia Sportage. The filters are about the same size. Harley's operate with low pressure, high volume oil pumps with 35 pounds of pressure hot at over 2k rpms. My wife's car doesn't have a pressure gauge so who knows what it puts out.,,

For my bike, a cbr 600, the wix filter is listed as a motorcylce, industrial equipment, and automotive filter (for kia, infiniti , and nissan). It also has an oil pressure relief valve built into the system so the bypass in the filter is irrelevant. From the wix filter look up it appears your bike uses the same filter.

How long and wide of a filter will fit your bike?
My Honda(stock) takes the same filter as your bike but I use a Baldwin B161-S(3 1/32" X 4 1/16") on my bike(biggest and longest that would fit my bike). Baldwin makes filters that go up to 3" X 5 1/8" that may fit(if you have room).
