Running XP on an old Netbook. Now that MS has abandoned us will software like Malwarebyts still keep updating/checking for us? The notbook is not worth buying a new OS. Ed

Malwarebytes and your anti-virus or internet security package will continue to work as they always have.

But, as new security holes are found in XP they will be all that are protecting you, as Microsoft will not be updating XP with new security patches. That's what "End of extended support" is all about.

Everything will continue to work, but XP will just become less and less secure as time goes by.

And eventually there will probably be very few if any antivirus programs available for Windows XP. As the number of Windows XP computers gets lower and lower the antivirus companies will eventually stop making antivirus software for it.

However, Windows computers using Windows XP could still be used for various special purposes if the computers are not hooked up to the internet.

Third-party companies will eventually stop developing/supporting stuff on XP. It isn't worth their time or money, especially free products.

Or flash drive used. We had a NASTY flash drive virus once when I worked at CompUSA that infected nearly all of the display PCs. It was so fast it'd infect a computer before you could format the drive.

Had to format all unopened flash drives on the Macs and use factory restore for all display machines to get rid of it. What a pain.

And once XP goes obsolete, the moment they find an exploit you'll be a serious target for anything, constantly- because that hole will never be patched.

Apparently from what I have heard the Iranian computers at the nuclear facilities were using Windows XP and somebody brought in an infected flash drive that infected those computers. The computers apparently were not hooked up to the internet.

And there will always be some holes in complicated software and not every hole has been patched in Windows XP. And once Microsoft no longer supports Windows XP there will be no patches coming out. So if a hacker discovers a hole in Windows XP and there are still enough Windows XP computers around to make it worth while that hole will make it possible to target the remaining Windows XP computers on the internet.

And brandini those infected flash drives were able to infect Mac computers? What was the malware? Did they identify it?

Not able to infect macs but we were able to see the files on the drives that windows couldn't. Was a weird few days.

Over the last 10 years, MS must have put 1000 security patches into XP. Are there any left worth working on for the hackers?

Window XP support ends on April 08. I need to learn how to migrate to Ubuntu.

My other laptops have Window 7, I use it once in a while and don't like it as much as XP.
