If you use xfinity for home phone service you cannot buy one and must rent.
Otherwise it's not hard to get another modem and router or combo router/cable modem. Others will chime in what to get in my case I use this:

The 6183 is a fine modem. It would be my choice if I were in the market for a new modem. Avoid the 6190 with its Puma6 chip.

I kicked my Comcast router to the curb several months ago and bought an Arris SB6183 and a Netgear Nighthawk X8 router. I wish I would have did it 4 years ago. Range is doubled, bandwidth more than doubled, no guest hotspot for the Comcast world to connect to, and I was able to connect the modem and configure it to my account WITHOUT contacting Comcast. A win all the way around.

Not true. I got the triple play bundle and from day 1 I used a TG862 which I bought for about $180. Payback is in 18 months. I think you can get them used for $125-$140 now.
I suppose you could get the SVG2482AC, but that's $240 so your payback is in about 2 years. It does come with an AC1750 router though.
At least you don't have to fiddle with your account to shut off the Xfinity wifi which comes enabled on all rented modems. It's off by default if you use your own.
It's super annoying that the voice package is a better deal that just internet and cable.

I have been using my Motorola (Arris) SB6120 for 8 years with Comcast.
Originally it required a call to Comcast to add the MAC address of my modem to my account for it to work.
I believe it can be done online now.
I use a separate WIFI router.
When I moved once they did try to bill me for not returning their modem I never had. One phone call and they removed the charge.
So watch your bill closely

I did it last year. I found good deal on amazon for a modem and a wireless and my signal is stronger and I have had zero issues with it. Might seem costly at first. If I remember it cost me $130 but you ultimately save in the long run
I agree with everyone on the 6183. It is the most stable modem out there right now and can be had for $50 on refurb special. You may or may not need to call customer service to get it set up. I needed to with mine but was very easy.
For wireless, I recommend the Apple Airport Extreme, which can be $129 from the Apple refurb store. You don't have to be an Apple household, as it will work with all devices and is dead reliable.

I have not rented a modem or wifi router for a dozen years. I also have the Arris SB6183 modem and it it excellent. It recently replaced the 6120 which gave up the ghost. The router is an ASUS RT-AC87U. They have worked with multiple cable companies.
Im thrilled with my TP Link cable modem and TP link AC 1750 router. I use Ooma for my landline, its been flawless.
Last week I was disconnected from XfinCable and called tech support who told me that my (personally owned) 2+yr old Arris 6120 modem had been added to Comacast's "end of life" list, meaning "soon to be denied support" by Comcast.
Tech support reestablished my connection (the modem was working fine), and I immediately began my search for a 6183 as recommended here...thanks guys.
I got a used one last weekend on fleabay for $32 and it arrived today in the retail box with all the "parts." I got it installed and I'm good again for another couple of years...saving about $200 (monthly fee is now $10!).
Tech support reestablished my connection (the modem was working fine), and I immediately began my search for a 6183 as recommended here...thanks guys.

If you remote into the phone modem you will see they have all the wifi functions turned off on it, unless you pay them the lease service.
The arris modem/router combos are junk anyways. Recommend your own AC router no matter what you do.
So the tech was correct, you need to use their equipment for Phone, but they can not charge you for it, if you provide your own data modem.
We ditched all their services, but internet, and went to Ooma for phone, and it has been perfect for $5 per month.
