AW32 for my unbranded wood splitter. Just need to top it off. Unknown slightly yellow fluid in there now. Small reservoir. I *could* get a gallon for $18 at Home Depot and flush the thing while I'm in there, with enough left over for the rest of my days. I can only find quarts of specialized hydraulic oils, like full syn rated for -50'F for snowplows, and they're still $20 a quart!

They sell "jack oil" by the quart, same stuff? I have PSF and ATF as well, but would like something 100% correct.

Plan to use in 40-70'F weather.

Looked at WM, AZ, AA. TSC was closed, is next on my list.

Deere regular or Low viscosity hygard. Sold by the quart for around $7. Regular hygard is probably sufficient for your use.

How much is your time worth visiting stores?

Supertech tractor hydraulic fluid at WM is $25 for two gallons. Find other uses for the balance. PS fluid, starting campfires, etc.

Else, find a quart of Type F or Dex/Merc III ATF.

TSC will have multiple options.

Get a gallon jug of tractor fluid and you can use it in a lot of things. My Focus seems to like it for power steering, as does the leaky front diff on the atv... Snow blower gearbox, I mix some bar oil in for some DIY undercoating and also mix it in bar oil if I need to stretch a jug.

A quart of hydraulic/ HST fluid from your nearest tractor dealer would be my suggestion as well. Like anything else, it would be less cost effective than simply buying a gallon.

Mixing ATF with hydraulic fluid could cause foaming. I had asked this question years ago when I bought my splitter. It came with oil, but not enough to top off the system. Can’t remember what I ended up doing, but I switched to Maxlife ATF around 2021.
