Their service has been ok....but the fees are just TOO HIGH. $4 on a $100 transaction is usury IMHO. I mean I don't mind paying, say 1-2%. They know they have the small business account guy cornered....

What are some other options for non-eBay money for goods transactions?

BTW I wrote the note through their system yesterday and have not heard a peep.

From what I have found, bank account transfers are free. Naturally, the credit card companies charge a fee to accept their cards and in return PayPal is passing that fee on to the person recieving the $$$. I am also sure they are adding a bit on for their troubles. I am not sure how much of your $4 is due to the crdeit card companies adn how much PayPal is making.

My mom has a merchants account that allows her to charge peoples American Express, Visa, And Mastercards. I remember her telling me that its around 2-2.5% of the transaction if you use Visa or MasterCard. American Express I think is slightly higher.

Does PayPal add a little extra security to transactions? Well, maybe not security but guarantees. You get what you pay for. I think the perception is that PayPal is less prone to scamming.

Google "merchant services" and you'll get tons of hits.

I researched this some time ago and concluded that unless you're doing a fairly high volume, you're not going to save much versus Paypal. It's worth researching, though.

The Oz Govt recently allowed businesses to add a fee (coincidentally ??) 4% for credit card transactions.

Not many businesses did it for too long.

I agree that 4% seems high for a company that is doing well. I have made the same complaint to PP but no response as well.

They do hold payments until funds are transferred so that is a plus.

Now, if we could get shipping costs to come down.

My citibank rewards card nicks gas stations and supermarkets for a 5% rebate to me. Paying 4% on paypal doesn't seem that bad for me in perspective.

I think western union offers a similar service.

That was just a nice way of saying that if you find a better deal you should take it.

From what I understand the average small merchant pays about 3% on sales for small business credit card account.

4% isn't very far out of line with that. Your dog could get a Paypall account no matter how small it's monthly tranactions were.

In my business, I pay 2.2% plus $0.20 per transaction for most credit cards. Tehre is a monthly fee or so as well. Amex is a bit higher and has its own fee.

I have noticed paypal tries like the dickens, when I pay some pal, to take it from my checking account and not my mastercard on file. Have to jump through about three hoops to undo the default each time.

YES - that is the exact problem! Is it possible to remove all access to my bank account for paying?

I mean I need it connected to my bank account for sweeping funds out of PayPal, but they hit my account when I specifically changed it for them NOT to.

Here's how I look at it. Paypal is not really a bank, but people treat them like one in their minds. Paypal takes advantage of it via timing....

Paypal seems to have become evil, maybe a necessary evil. Sucks.

PayPal is a harsh mistress -- and her pimp ebay just sent me smirkingly a friendly email reminder of final value fees being raised to 3% in the very near future.
