I was doing some work on a friend's '05 CL55 this afternoon (brake pads, engine oil/filter and air filters) and was taking it to the gas station to adjust tyre pressures when I was done.

The station is located on a major highway, and has a curved entrance. Because lots of idiots drive in at ridiculous speeds, they end up going straight at the curve and driving straight into the gas station sign post. So they have 6 speed bumps there as traffic calming measures, which are pretty high.

The CL55 is a bit of a low car, and the bumps are high. I drove in real slow, and was going really gently over the bumps...it's not my car, I have to return it as it was when I took it. A lot of people, even those with SUVs and trucks, do the same thing.

Just after I went over the first bump, I heard a REALLY loud, long horn chirp. I was literally like what the?! It was some stupid woman in a late 90s, beat up Accord driving over the bumps like they weren't even there, and giving me a dirty look for taking my time. She didn't just leave it there, but overtook me on the single lane heading to the station, throwing up stones that were by the curb. No offence to anyone, but I wasn't driving an AMG Mercedes over those bumps faster than it could take it, just to keep this woman happy. She's very lucky the stones didn't hit the car, body or glass, or things would have gotten very messy, very quickly.

This part made me laugh. It almost sounds like you're saying that an old Accord can handle the bumps better than the AMG.

High performance cars aren't made for speed bumps. I think there is a special place in "Heck" for the person who invented them.

Here in Vegas, you get the same result of you have the impudence of stopping at a red light before making the right turn. Honks, shaken fists, etc. It'a gotten so bad that when I'm in the slow lane approaching a green light at speed, I accelerate and check 5 degrees into the person trying to make the right-turn-on-red without slowing down. Their eyes get big, and they do stop when they realize I'll still be accelerating when I hit them. (I learned that trick from Okinawa taxi drivers).

This is why I have an air horn and I'm fluent in traffic sign language.

I'm working on a momentary push button control for my brake lights that I can hit without hitting the brakes. Just for jerks behind me. I was thinking an exhaust cutout would be great for idiots on cell phones.

When people honk at me impatiently I just turn their way, smile real big and wave at them as if they were waving at me in the first place in a friendly manner. It dispells many a tense feelings when you appear happy. If not, it ticks them off more which can be even more entertaining.

That would be one of the most ingenious passive aggressive tools to combat cellphone bimbohood.

What would be a nice added touch is some remote minicam so you can stay, more or less, looking straight ahead and switch it on and off as they pause and look ..and go back to their conversation.

Depending on how much of a cellphone junkie bimbo they are (males included) ..it might take several evolutions for them to realize the cause and effect relationship between the ear implant and the blasting noise level.

While I'm not so motivated to do such things at this point in my life, we share the same "creative" sense of ..not quite humor ..but close enough.

I've actually got a set up to turn on my reverse lights without actually shifting into reverse. If someone keeps flashing to pass like a Christmas tree then starts tail gating, and there are vehicles ahead of me, I turn them on. Usually this is followed by a nose dip by the tail gater.

Bad behavior like that only motivates me to go even slower.

When someone is following me so closely in the truck, that I can only see the roof of their car over the top of the tailgate, I lift my foot off of the gas and start coasting until they've finally had enough and pass.

Problem solved.

You are supposed to go over those speed bumps with your cap on sideways and the seat back lowered so you can't see over the steering wheel. Then you slow right down to a crawl and go over them at an angle.People don't dare honk their horn because everyone is scared of Gangstas.

i slow down with tailgaters, until they get the message, and back off.especially in winter weather.
falcon -- your reverse lights idea is genius ! one day when you get some time, i would appreciate a PM detailing the setup. have a good day.

+3 I deal with this alot in my 06. I can't see their lights or hood. Hazard lights work well too. I have a 60" light bar that will flash. People usually back off - usually.
