I just picked up 24 quarts of Havoline, which I will probably use on my Mercury. It has 70k on it and doesn't use any oil during it's 5k oil changes. So I have no problem using the Havoiline for the next 20k.

My wifes Merc has almost 78k on it and uses probably .5 quart during it's 5k oil change. Would you consider this normal useage? I was going to go pick up another 24 quarts to use on it. Would it be wise to switch to a high mileage oil? I've onwed many modulars over the years, just wanted to get some of your opinions before I head back to the auto parts store in the next few days.

For the modular in particular I don't know but half a quart in 5000 miles is next to nothing. From what I've seen from other makers this is no where near what would be considered a problem. I wouldn't bother with a HM oil, that Havoline should work just fine in both!

+1 Keep it in the safe range and enjoy your new stash. Havoline is a good oil

5w20 is correct for that modular engine. and .5qt in 5k miles is normal. most brand new engines will use that much. thats considered normal for a modular ford. the modular fords we have all use about 1/2-3/4 quart every 5k miles. some of those engines have low mileage and some with almost 300k they all use about the same amount. one v10 uses about 1qt every 3k or so on 5w20 but it pulls a 6k lb trailor everyday, and has 180k+ hard miles.

.5 qt in 5k isnt bad at all....if you luiek Havoline Oreily's has a great sale on it right now or maybe you already knew that and thats why your asking...just thought I would let ya know.

SkyShip - I think you think like me if you're from UK. I'm not from UK, but I use your definition of Merc.

Merc is Mercedes.

In the US, people sometimes refer to Mercury vehicles as Merc. Unfortunately, pretty much only Mercedes owners and fans refer to Mercedes as a Merc here.

The Havoline products are quite good. I have used the Chevron products in appropriate vehicles. They seem to always be great values.

I agree with that!

I have no idea what the obession is on this site with HM oil..I am not talking about you MuzzleFlash..I have never used HM oil in any car I owned and I keep my cars [Panthers] till 200-300K miles.
