The battery in my car is 7 years old and is sounding like it’s struggling when cranking. I was looking for a new battery but they can be upwards of $150-200 depending where you purchase. I have seen some used 24f batteries that are maybe 9 months old but have been sitting for $50. What type of issues would I experience from a new battery that has been sitting?

I have but I won't in the current climate.

There used to be a junkyard that sold them for $20 about 7 years back. I went in with my little tester and found a ringer. I doubt they do anymore. I go with the walmart value batteries. Note, note, note, the WM website shows higher prices and less selection than I can get in store.

When something new is reasonably priced, used versions are giveaway priced. When something gets expensive, used versions go for 80% of new with 50% of life remaining. This goes for cars, tires, and now batteries.

A new battery that's been sitting is better than one that's been working. Top off its charge and send it. But seriously get the WM Value battery.

That would almost be universally a no from me. Only if it was a vehicle I was planning on selling very soon. I work out of my truck, require it for the farm, and the next city is an hour away. No way I’m putting a used battery with unknown history in my vehicle.

You're looking at auto parts stores, not Walmart, huh? Walmart sells the same Exide, Johnson Controls, etc batteries that the auto parts stores sell and for close to half the price.

Ok seems like used is a no go. I want a deka battery and walmart here in the notheast are deka batteries. How does the everstart maxx vs the value battery value compare? The maxx has 120rc and a much higher cca.

You'd want to weigh your size to see if there's a difference between options.

The conspiracy theorists think the value batteries are similar to or the same as the expensive ones with a lesser warranty.

And when you think about it, how would the assembly line stop a process then do a slightly cheaper process that still has to turn out a useable product?

Year old batteries $22 each plus core at junk yard.

Do you have a battery charger? Car might not be able to give it a full charge or you're not driving enough to give it a full charge. I'd throw it on a battery charger and see how much more you get out of it. You should also get it load tested at an auto parts store. Also about those Walmart value batteries, you could try one of those, just a one year warranty but I think someone on here posted they got one and it lasted 3-4 years which was the typical amount of time they got out of a battery as they were in a hot state where batteries only last 3-4 years. I would think in NY it would probably last longer. $50 is not bad for a used battery only 9 months old, but I think the value one at Walmart is $65 and it at least has a 1 year warranty. I guess I'd pay the extra $15 for a one year warranty.

So which is it? Used or new?

I do decent length drives. Yes I’ll do some short couple mile drives but i have mostly been doing 40 mile round trips 3 days a week with the occasional 240 mile round trips.

I bought new from Walmart for a decent price compared to Advance. Advance was say, $160, Walmart was about $110. If I lived next to a junkyard, I would give them a try..

In my climate, location, and status of free rides or battery delivery from friends and family, It does not make sense to buy a used battery. I went to Advance, used a coupon code, and got the premium battery with the best warranty. Paid about $160.. To me, its worth my time to buy a new premium battery.
