would a optima redtop fit?

That is basically contradictory. Whether a battery is FLA or AGM, the chemistry is lead acid, and the output per interface area of the plates is the same. In batteries, there is no substitute for plate area; the more plate area a battery has, the greater output and capacity the battery has. Plate area rules. The larger the lead plates, the heavier the battery is, but the greater the capacity is.

Optima batteries incorporate two innovative technologies: absorbed glass mat and spiral-wound plates. There are other batteries that use the same AGM technology that are configured in conventional rectangular cells rather than with spiral-wound plates. Those batteries use more of the enclosed space of the battery than the spiral-wound designs do, because the empty space between adjacent round spiral wound cells is wasted.

For a given height by width by depth space under the hood, the battery with the greater plate area has the greater capacity, and a lighter or smaller battery will have less capacity.

^^^Truth.^^^

Deka, Odyssey
When I can, an oversize wet cell with deeper discharge ability (like a deep cycle/start hybrid (compromise) is where i've gone).

I agree, Optima is no longer what they used to be, and even that is old news.

Actually, the ONLY reason I went with the Red Top over the Odyssey originally, some 12 years ago was precisely because it was some 5-8 lbs. lighter than the EnerSys product for MY car.

So NO, given the same output/specs/group size, the Optimas are ligher than the equivalent Odysseys (notice; I did NOT say; "better than", "longer lasting", etc.).

I'd rather have a battery that weighs 8lbs more than have a dead battery.

pure overpriced garbage now.

just get a regular battery at AAP with their 40$ off 100$ coupon and 25$ MIR

x2 I would avoid the Optima, and that is coming from someone who owns one.

X3. I owned and loved Optimas for many years. But they went down the pooper at the last ownership change. I now use Diehard Platinum. Also trying out a single Batteries Plus "X2Power" (made in USA) to see how hit holds up. I don't mind paying a lot for sealed batteries... I just hate it when I don't get long life out of them. :-(

I had my last Optima for 1 year. The current one is about 4 months old. I hope it lasts longer. Luckily my old one was under warranty still. The guy at the parts store said he sees more Optimas come back than the cheap store brand batteries.

Based upon the history from the Optima site it appears that they may have gone downhill in 2010 when they moved to a new manufacturing facility. I guess I won't be buying another one next time I need a battery. Whew! I almost talked my girlfriend into spending the extra money last year when she needed a battery. I never would have heard the end of that!

AGREED! Which is WHY I will go with an EnerSys product next change.

But when I purchased BOTH of my Optimas, I was under the impression that the quality/output/longevity was AT LEAST the equal of the Odysseys (this site did not start bashing them that early), with the benefit of less weight on the nose of the car where it needs it LEAST.
