I just bought a 96 Saturn SL2. It is a 1.9L DOHC (twincam) and had 88k miles on it. I just got it. The oil have been changed religiously at 3k miles (i have reciepts to prove it) The oil has been changed at Iffy Lube, or Valvoline, etc....just quick oil change shops etc. No one specific place using 10w-40. I have been told that Saturns use some oil although so far, I have not seen oil use so far in this car.

I drive 4k miles a month on average. 90-95% of that is 65 mph on cruise for trips at least 1/2 hour long, and usually at least 1 hour. This is mostly on rolling hills out in the country through farm land. I do live on a gravel road, but that is only about 1 mile each way. Normally do not drive on gravel that much.

I am thinking of switching to a full synthetic, but wonder if that is a good move...and if I do it...on a Saturn, driving like I do, how often should I change the oil?

Thanks.

The advantage with synthetic is longer changes and cleaner engine. I think there may also be a milage improvement with mobil 1 also. If you do mobil 1 you can go 6000-10,000 between changes and still have a clean well maintained engine.
Doing a few UOA will tell you for sure and I would start with 10w30 and see if your consumption is a problem or not.
