Worst Tires Ever?

"Our Pacifica has Michelin MXV4s and my dad is very scared when its time to replace them. There is no cheap alternative for these MVXV4s."

IMHO almost any tire would be a cheaper and better alternative to these overpriced pieces of crap.

The tire Corvettes should come with instead of Run Craps.

Agreed! I had the GSD3s on my last car, but my Corvette has the run craps on them. The GSD3s were awesome!

Wife's '99 Jeep Gland Cherokee had Goodyear Wrangler APs until earlier this year. One day I had to borrow it for some errands since my car was in for warranty repairs and found out how bad these tires really were. On snowy streets I had almost zero traction, the Jeep was downright dangerous and she had been using it like this without saying a word. On clear roads the vehicle shook and the tire noise was most impressive! So, no more of this BS. I got on tirerack.com, started reading tire reviews and settled on the Firestone Destination LE. WOW, a day & night difference in all areas. For my '03 Tahoe, which has worn out the OEM tires, I will be installing the Dest LE. Great tire!

Hands Down, the worst tires I've ever owned were GoodYear Vectors. They cupped, wouldn't stay balanced, and felt like you were running washboards. Awful !!!

This is going back a long, long time ago. In 1966, I bought a used 1964 Corvette Sting Ray 365 bhp/327 ci. It came with Firestone DeLuxe Champion 2 ply bias tires. I was 19 years old at the time, and the tires were a new set that the original owner put on the car as replacements. The OEM tires were the same. These were the same model tires that GM put on mid size family sedans in that era. Not real appropriate for a 140 mph sports car.

I wore them out and the replacements I bought were Pirelli Cinturatos, H rated. Much, much better.

Michelin now owns and makes BFG and Uniroyal, with Michelin being positioned as the premier line, BFG the middle line, and Uniroyal the economy line.

I will not voluntarily buy any Firestone branded tire. They had a poor reputation 40 years ago, and in the 1970s, as an earlier poster noted, they had a major fiasco with their first real effort at domestic radials, the Firestone 500.

the general's (hahaha) on my talon are heinous. I mean, i know that i'm making significantly more power than stock (that's why they're going away first thing) but with 205's i shouldn't be able to break all four loose on the dry.

Hands down though, the worst tires i have ever driven on in my ENTIRE LIFE are michelins.

Michelin MCX A/T's for that matter.

I have a 92 4runner that i run 32x11.5x15's on. I had a set of these michelins, and they did last for like a zillion miles (probably around 60k).

From the day they were put on, until the day i replaced them, they didn't stick (i.e. have any traction at all) on:

Pavement
Wet pavement
gravel
mud
snow
ice
sand
etc

They are by far and away the most heinous rubber substances sold as "tires".

I replaced them with Yokohama Geolander A/T's in the same size. Now i realize that i actually *do* have body roll, and not oversteer or understeer EVERYWHERE.

Oh, and the talon is getting a set of Yokohama AVS ES100's in a 245/40ZR17 size.

I have those Geolanders on my Dodge Cummins diesel 3/4 ton, these tires are toughest tire I can find for grid (gravel) roads, they dont seem to wear down and gravel is brutal on tires. But these tires throw stones with their aggressive tread, hard on my and others' paint jobs.

I was really unimpressed with the worn Goodyear Eagle RS-As that came on my parents' Maxima. I convinced my dad to try out some Michelin Pilot XGT H4s and MAN, these were probably the best tires I've ever used, wet or dry. I think their Pilot line, which may be overpriced, has some very good tires.

I've got Bridgestone Potenza RE-750s on both of my cars now and I think they are an excellent tire.

Yeah they definitely did not last past maybe 30k but, 30,000 miles is a LOT. I cannot understand people who insist on getting 80,000 miles from a set of tires. If they are squealing constantly and slipping in the rain, I sure don't want to drive on them for 80k. But I suppose I'm more of a driving "enthusiast" than people who buy tires for maximum life.

...but the Destinys AREN'T "squealing constantly and slipping in the rain"...... geesh....

another reason: I have better things to do with my money than spend it on tires. Some here may not understand that, but some people have a real life.

Well "real life", then consider this. As your tires age, they lose their grip and flexability. A tire can only go thru so many heat cycles before detereorating. So that new tire that originally stopped on a dime, now stops on a dime plus 5'...10'...15' or more longer. Plus your emergency handling traits diminish as well. Is that what you want for you and your family?

give them some time, they'll wear very fast. My first (and last) set of Pilots were all 4 shot before 25k miles. Read the reviews at Tires.com, not too many have had much luck with them.

Until about 15k, however, they were great. Grippy, quiet. Soft rubber will do that...

Discount Tire prorated the Pilots towards the Michelin Destiny, a 80k mile tire. I got 50% off the set of Destinys after protating.

We had Michelin X-Radials on our old 1989 Ford Aerostar for as long as I can remember. I think I was 6 or 7 when my dad got them. We went to Mexico a total of 12 times in that van, along with other various trips and being a daily driver. They finally died my freshman year. I was 14. They died not because there was no tread but two of the tires developed a bulge in the sidewall. There was still some useable tread in them but my dad said out with the old in the the new.. he put one 2 X-radial Plus tires, then 2 more of the x-radials died at the same time Costco opened up so he put on 2 of the Kirkland Signature tires, made by Michelin, and they were good.... then we said out with the whole van and in with the Windstar.

EDIT: btw, 202,000 miles. Engine rebuilt at 30K (blown head gasket), and countless transmissions but three sets of tires. I think we got well over 80K on those tires and they were fine. Just don't put them on a Grand Cherokee... he tried...

I am about to puke but post this i must for humanity's sake!

GUARDSMAN TIRES by Bridgestone/Sears EWWWWW

Traction B rating I mean what the **** kind of sham are they running there? Disgusting. I would not install Guardsmans on my worst enemies car.

GENERAL TIRES....hmm I dunno do not like them just cause there cheapo rubber.

GOODYEAR EAGLE HP : Those were absolutely deadly and the biggest mistake of my life (almost killing me)

Funny how fast GY got rid of them over a production stint of little more than a year!

Michelin MXV4's : overpriced OEM stuff, the factories can order better stuff for thier showroom deliveries!

The Goodyear RS-A's that were OEM on my Neon R/T coupe had bad dry traction AND lousy treadwear. By 23k miles they were toast. For the next set, I ran Yoko AVSi's and got 23k miles out of those before the heat-cycling turned them to bricks. With a couple more autocrosses and a couple of open track events on the Yokos.

The AVSi's were deadly on sleet and ice, though...

Uniroyal Tiger Paws, Dunlop Aquajets, Olympic Reflex Radials, and some Goodyears I can't remember but they were bad. Have Yokohama's on both vehicles now and they are good value fwiw.

Great thread.

I'll have to lump all the crappy tires together in a bunch.

General XP2000s on a RWD Beamer...wipeout in wet. BAD ride.

Goodyear Eagle GA oem on Audi and VWs, ok in dry, DANGEROUS IN WET.

Michelin MXV4+ TOTAL crap, I cannot believe people pay big money for these, I sold 1/2 my worn ones used and almost paid for the awesome SP5000 replacments. (still one of my favourites)

Pirelli P7000 garbage and very frequent sidewall bubbles, new P6 had this problem too.

I was quite suprised when my Potenza RE 950s were so bad in rain and dangerous in snow.

My wife had a new Dunlop SP A2 blow on at 50 our Quantum Syncro and she totaled the car.

Cheng-Shin motorcycle tire would squirrel badly. replaced with Bridgestone Spitfires and they saved my life.

Best ones:

My wife's Yoko 600 snows are going on their 4th season and have 8/32nds

Falken Ziex 512 is everything the Potenzas should have been.

Conti Extremes are incredible in snow, like a rallye tire, ZR rated and not expensive

Dunlop A2s are quiet and good in snow, probally used 20 of them, one blew out.

Dunlop SP5000s are super-high quality and great performance.

Mich Artic Alphin are incredible traction, but wear is bad.

Turanza H and Z are likely the best touring tire available, quality is unmatched.

PS in defense of Michelin, XGTs are pretty good. Sears sold a house Pirelli, the "GT" that was pretty bad.
