So my car has always used 5W30 Conventional motor oil all its life. No problems. Like many of the members here I have my own preference of oil. I've always used 5W30 AC Delco Conventional Motor oil bought from the Dealer. I've never had problems with it so I have always used it. Believe it or not it's not that expensive either. The real drawback is that you can't ever get it on sale.

Now I have known for a long time that Delco oil is Mobil oil in the USA and Petro Canada oil in Canada. I could tell when I bought my jugs of oil that it clearly was Petro Canada oil. Well the other day I bought a jug of Delco oil and it clearly is a Mobil oil here in Canada now given the fact that the jug now looks identical to Mobil jugs. That's fine. Mobil makes great synthetic oils. What worries me is how are their conventional oils?

Here in Canada we have a conventional Mobil oil called Mobil Super 1000. It is a "Made In Canada" oil. My guess is that the Delco oil I just bought is a relabeled Mobil Super 1000. What worries me is that oil only has a pour point of -33 degrees Celcius (-27.4 Fahrenheit). Whereas many other Conventional oils have much lower pour points. Why would a "Made In Canada" oil have such a poor pour point? You would think given how harsh Winters can be here that they would know better?

It has been an unusually warm Winter this year (thankfully) but it still worries me that if it gets really cold out the oil just won't preform. Just to let everyone here know I understand the advantages of synthetic oils in the Winter. I don't use them because I do nothing but short trip driving so I change my oil every 3 months and am no where near 5,000 KM (3,000 Miles) when it gets changed. Running a synthetic oil and having to change it so often would be much to expensive for me. What are the BITOG members thoughts? Am I okay to use this oil now?

You would be fine using that lube. Can you get your hands on Petro-Canada Supreme for the same cost. It appears to be a good cold weather oil. Either way the Mobil will work.

Well I already bought it so I might as well just use it. I just hope it doesn't get too cold out all of a sudden. I mean it may not even be a relabeled Mobil Super 1000. I'm just assuming it is. I wish I could find a data sheet on the Delco oil somewhere online. I've tried but haven't had any luck.

That's what I was thinking of doing. It just annoys me to have to go out and get another oil.

I should. I just might. The problem is the guys that work at the Parts Dept are all a bunch of old grouchy men who i'm sure when I try to return the oil to them and explain why they will give me a hard time about it.

You are concerned about using a top tier oil with very short OCI?

If it isn't what you want return it. Otherwise just use it, you won't hurt anything. There is a GM powertrain engineer shaking his head right now...

Then we are even. I was shaking my head at the GM engineers 2 years ago when I was replacing my Intake Manifold Gaskets.
