I must have missed the part where he didn't over eat. Good gawd....what is that fleshy appendage in the center hanging down?

I nearly puked.....it's almost lunch time here. I guess I can do without.

Uribe's case puzzles doctors since his cholesterol and blood-sugar levels are normal, despite his extreme obesity.

I think that this would be atypical for someone in his condition. Fat resists insulin.

Odd though. They are going to do an intestinal bypass ..a procedure that has been abandoned, for the most part, for the Bariatric method. The advantage of the intestinal bypass is that the patient's behavior doesn't need to change. They can still stuff themselves like pigs and not absorb the food. Herb Albert (if you're old enough to remember) had this done about 35-40 years ago. I did hear some reference (you don't run across this topic every day) about a higher incidence of cancer with the intestinal bypass method ..but that wasn't from an authoritative source.

The Bariatric procedure just starves you to a normal weight. You can't eat enough to sustain anything other then scarecrow weight. One of my wife's friends had it done. She lost the weight alright. She had to admit that, although she looks better ..and it's nice to get thin women's clothes...she doesn't feel one bit better then she did when she was overweight. She has to take medication for the rest of her life.

Yeah, how does bypass surgery make sense if overeating isn't causing the condition?

Obviously there's a bigger problem than just over-eating to get that big, but I still think it's impossible to gain weight if you're consuming less calories than you use.

If an alcoholic has a genetic predisposition to drinking, he'll never have a problem if he never takes a drink.
If a person has a genetic predisposition to excessive weight gain, he'll never have a problem if he eats correctly and excersises properly.

Physics 101:

to gain weight, caloric intake > energy used.

Even if the guy has some medical condition that allows his body to be very efficient and live on fewer calories than is typical, if he gains weight, he is eating too much. There is no medical condition that will cause weight gain from nothing. You have to eat.

At some point in the process, the guy got so big that he can't exercise and all his food is brought to him by "friends". Prior to that, he was in full control and chose gluttony over health.

Consequences are a b*tch.

All he needs to do is **** off a couple of friends so they quit bringing food and his problems are solved.

You are what you are. I'm sorry, but I can't feel sorry for him. Get off your arshe and do something about it. Sick and tired of hearing people whine over things that they could have done something about if they wanted to, they CHOOSE not to. Keith's last sentence is dead on.

In my experience - dieting alone doesn't work. You'll always over eat one day and lose the week of eating less. What helped me lose my 10 pounds was running a mile or two every other day. Exercise. Find out how many calories you burn via online calorie burner and eat a lot less and then exercise to burn a few hundred calories = weight loss.

That has got to be a horrible situation to be in. The red light should have gone on at 400 pounds at least!

He got himself into a self degrading condition. You're right OH. He is past the point of no return without outside intervention. His weight, at some point, made exercise a non-option.

I'm overweight. I really went up when I tore up my knee and couldn't do too much vigirous exercise (even swimming is painful - "water workouts" are okay as is walking). I also LOVE to eat. I don't blame anyone for it. I was always destine to be "husky". Remove the "beast of burden" tasks ...(visions of cheeks swelling like a baloon inflating)
