"World First" Ukrainian kill of a Russian SU-30...

A missile launched from a jet begins with that jet’s speed and altitude.

The ultimate speed, and altitude, that the missile’s motor can provide is based on the starting point.

And the range at which it can hit a target, depends on the speed and altitude that it can achieve.

So, yes, launching an AIM-9 from a boat severely limits the range at which it can hit a target.

But the range is not zero in this case, a missile fired from the shoulder of a man is still lethal inside of a short range.

I was just making a little joke/being a wise guy

How did that work if it's ok to ask, a bottle of LN that opens up and fills a heat exchanger when the missile is armed?

Depends on the missile. A Stinger supposedly uses a cartridge with liquid argon and a battery. That’s useless in less than a minute.

There’s been talk about why the Hoithis haven’t just been knocking down every drone. They have a limited supply of MANPADS and can’t just waste their coolant cartridges just in case.

The missiles are relatively easy to get on the black market compared to those cartridges. The battery is designed to go dead by itself in a few years to make it hard to keep an illicit stockpile.

Javelins are built into the missile 😎. You can shoot low and slow flying helos with it but I don't think anybody's claimed one, yet.

Seen video of one in action. They're pretty short range, but they just fire going up and then fall down to their target. Supposedly works because tanks aren't generally as heavily armored on top. But certainly they're capable of climbing up into a somewhat low altitude (like typical helicopter elevation).

Actually a Stinger uses <redacted>

That it uses argon in the battery coolant unit is public information.

Ready Round
A ready round consists of the weapon round and a battery coolant unit.
When the battery coolant unit is inserted into the weapon round, it becomes
a ready round. The battery coolant unit is a thermal battery that provides
prelaunch power for the system and argon gas that cools the missile seeker
for a maximum of 45 seconds (ready round). Once activated, the battery
coolant unit must be removed within three minutes of activation to avoid
damage to the gripstock due to excessive overheating. Once activated, the
battery coolant unit is expended and removed from the gripstock.

Javs can reach a few miles - outside the range of MBTs and can be switched to direct attack mode when firing at helos or from enclosed areas such as a building. Although the faster the target is moving, the less range the missile will have as it expends fuel and energy for horizontal tracking.

I was listening to a podcast and one of the guys holds the record for his base… 4500m with a javelin.

Only problem was he was supposed to be aiming for one way closer on his range, not the mortar range 😂

This Lockheed Martin promotional vid claims a 65-4000m range. There are several demos and the closest is pretty close. Maybe 100m. And that one still goes up and rains down. I think there are settings to launch horizontally.

Raytheon’s vid isn’t so slickly produced, but they do have an extended slo mo sequence.

Happy VE Day! On this day we commemorate the Russians' defeat of the German Third Reich which resulted in the end of the Holocaust and other Nazi atrocities in Nazi collaborator countries.

I truly desire the end of the current conflict and have a Russian anti-war flag as my profile picture on this site as well as a physical flag hanging on my front porch.
