Celebrating "World First" Ukrainian kill of a Russian SU-30...

The pictures shared by Ukraine showed it had AIM-9 missiles on it, but previous versions used the R-73 (and shot down helicopters). They're on the 7th version of that drone boat now.

From what I have read about these drone boats from the russian side they are really getting worried about them. There isn't really a good way to defend against something like this. Small boats with very little heat / radar signature are incredibly hard to track on water. Their only way to defend against them is basically be in line of site with them and use guns on helicopters etc. Now Ukraine is strapping missiles on the top of them that's pretty much a No Go now because they can shoot the planes / helicopters down that try to intercept them. These things are going to be a thorn in the russians sides for quite a long time!

So does launching a missile from a boat, which is normally launched from a jet doing, IDK, at least 500mph, reduce it's range because it has to start from essentially 0 mph?

Very likely! However I suppose when you know that what you're aiming at will likely be in visual line of sight it probably isn't that much of an issue any more.

Last night I watched a very good documentary on the Cuban missile crisis , it was so close to happening , if it was up to the military leaders on both sides it would have happened . Scary stuff.

yes. quite a lot.

the range would depend on how high and fast the target is, but it won't be substantially more than a manpad. the missile is more likely to score a kill though

the su-30 use their cannons to attack the drone boats, so they will actually come to them. The russians don't have anything that can reliably shoot those drones from a safe distance, possibly no-one does as they are so low in the water.

Wouldn’t it start from -500mph?

A missile launched from a jet begins with that jet’s speed and altitude.

The ultimate speed, and altitude, that the missile’s motor can provide is based on the starting point.

And the range at which it can hit a target, depends on the speed and altitude that it can achieve.

So, yes, launching an AIM-9 from a boat severely limits the range at which it can hit a target.

But the range is not zero in this case, a missile fired from the shoulder of a man is still lethal inside of a short range.
