I'm glad Italy won, but I'm really just discusted with the falling/diving. It has really ruined the game for a lot of people.

GM, I would have rather the American team won. I'm only 1/2 Italian and I'm American first, before anything else.

How about Zidane? What a way to exit the game...

I know, buster. I'd like to win the lottery.

I really didn't care who won, but after Zidane got the red card, I wanted Italy to win. It's more just that Zidane didn't go out as a winner after that dumb*ss move.

It was really a stupid move on his part. Especially from such a great player. This is not the first time he has done this.

Typical. Wog ball players are all the same. I'd have done a lot more than a head butt thats for sure.

Insults to mother provoked Zidane

ZINEDINE Zidane has broken his silence on his World Cup final shame and insisted he had no regrets over his astonishing attack on Italy defender Marco Materazzi.

After three days of intense speculation about what it was Materazzi had said to provoke the French superstar, Zidane finally revealed his side of the story in an interview with French broadcaster Canal Plus.

And while he apologised to the world for the headbutt on the Inter Milan player, he refused to back down, saying Materazzi repeatedly had insulted his mother and sister.

"I can't say I have any regrets about what I did because that would be like admitting that he had every reason to say what he said," Zidane said. "I can't, repeat can't, say that. He had no reason to say what he said. It's always the reaction that is sanctioned and not the provoker. I tell myself that if things happened this way, it's because somewhere up there it was decided that way. And I don't regret anything that happened, I accept it."

Zidane explained how the confrontation started when Materazzi began pulling his shirt. "I told him to stop and that he could have it if he wanted at the end of the match," he added. "That was when words were said, very hard words and he said them several times.

"Words can sometimes be harder than actions. It all went very quickly and they were words that hurt me deep down. I would rather have taken a punch in the jaw than have heard that and the real culprit should be sanctioned and the real culprit is him. He provoked it all.

"Do you imagine that in a World Cup final like that with just 10 minutes to go to the end of my career, I am going to do something like that because it gives me pleasure?"

Although Sunday's final was Zidane's last match before retirement, FIFA is still investigating his dismissal for violent conduct. He faces a fine and a possible five-match ban.

While Zidane was speaking on television in France, excerpts from an interview Materazzi has given to Italian sports paper Gazzetta dello Sport were issued on its website.

"I didn't mention anything about religion, politics or racism," he said.

"I didn't insult his mother. I lost my mother when I was 15 years old and still get emotional when I talk about it. Naturally, I didn't know that his mother was in hospital but I wish her all the best. Zidane is my hero and I have always admired him a lot."

Materazzi had admitted that he did insult Zidane, but suggested his comments were nothing out of the ordinary.

Asked what he would say to the FIFA inquiry, Zidane replied: "I will go and I will tell everything I have just said." He also said he was sorry for his actions, which he confessed were unacceptable.

"I want to ask for forgiveness from all the children who watched that," Zidane said. "There was no excuse for it.

"I want to be open and honest about it because it was seen by two or three billion people watching on television and millions and millions of children were watching.

"I have children, I know what it's like and I always tell them not to be taken advantage of and to avoid this type of situation."

Zidane ruled out the possibility of returning as a player.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter explained that Zidane's red card was not the reason he failed to reappear on the pitch after the match.

"I was told that at the end of the game, the French federation executives asked Zidane to go and receive his medal and he replied that he didn't deserve any medal," Blatter said.

I stand with Zizou; he shouldn't have done what he did, but I have little use for Materazzi's style as a human being.

If anyone here has ever played sports on some high level, you should know by now that this kind of stuff ALWAYS goes on. Even at the High School level.

Zidane has done this before and has a history of this behavior. What Materazzi said was low, no doubt. Call me biased, but who really was the winner here? Materazzi caused the only French goal by fouling Zidane. He then made up for it with a goal of his own about 10 min. later. Then, he got Zidane angry enough to get him ejected. Didn't make a difference though bc the same guy that missed the penalty shot was still going to shoot the ball. Italy nailed all 5 goals.

*This WC has been criticized a lot for bad calls. The game of soccer itself has turned into a soap opera with a lot of good acting...or bad depending on how one looks at it.

People often point out the falling, the fouling, the crying, the faux drama in soccer. Well, while I don't like soccer (I don't care for sports that require running myself) and find it utterly boring, I did play soccer in high school. As a player, you don't stand around much like in some other team sports, but you run almost all the time. Getting a small break, even if it takes falling down, getting fouled, or maybe fouling, is worth it, even if you end up looking like a total wuss or jerk! At least that's my theory.

Three questions:

What do you think were the best goals of this world cup?

(For me, it's Maxi Rodriguez's goal in the Argentina/Mexico game, followed very closely by Fabio Grosso's in the semifinal against Germany.)

Best defensive plays?

(Hard one to call for me. Perhaps Portugal's keeper, Ricardo, saving three PKs. Or pick any number of plays by Cannavaro. Buffon of course was fantastic through the whole tournament, too.)

Best games?

(I say Argentina/Mexico, Italy/Germany, France/Brasil. Zidane was absolutely mesmerizing against Brasil.)

I think the player of the tournament was Fabio Cannavaro. Guy is awesome!

Lot of other great goals and players. I'll have to think about that.

How many of of the players will still be playing when the next Workd Cup comes around? The German players (I don't know how many of them are natives

) are pretty young, as far as I know, so many of them might be back.

Germany could be very good! Young talent. The others I don't know. France didn't seem to have any true native Frenchman on the team. Unless
France is now in Africa. lol

It is not racist. Soccer is called Wog ball here, it'san affectionate term. Dont shoot the messenger. I'm getting heartily sick of Americans applying their rules to those living in other countries. Put a sock in it!
