WORLD CUP 2026 THREAD

Ditto on the extra time. They didn't deserve that long of a chance.
EVERYTHING was given to them in order to give them a shot. After all, if you want to make it to the next stage, don't let in two goals in 90 seconds.

The foul I did not understand was the one that gave Mexico a penalty kick. I saw two players playing the ball, the English one a millisecond behind the Mexico player. The fact that incidental contact was made and the Mexico player went down doesn't make it a penalty. If the English player was playing the opponent and not the ball, I could see the call.
Looking at the play in real time I could see possibly, and I emphasize possibly, an indirect free kick awarded for an unsafe play, but a penalty kick, IMO, was inappropriate.
I don't think the VAR process adds to the game.

Well, a fault play in the penalty area is almost always a direct penalty kick. If it was out of the penalty area it would've been different kick.

They may have an interest, but their player wasn't suspended and the penalty wasn't committed against one of their players. I believe in the American court system, this is referred to as 'standing'.
Understood. Was hoping for a resolution that would restore confidence. Thank you for the patient responses.

That is my brothers conclusion about VAR

A substantial percentage of professional soccer is to trip the opponent into a punishable offense. The higher the level - the nastier the tricks.

Guy was fighting for the ball and managed to hit a leg without hitting the ball. In a perfect rule abiding world, he would have had to stop his leg a millimeter before hitting that other guy's leg, or managed to touch the ball with a size 17, banana-shaped foot. Neither are realistic. Bingo for the other guy. Referee could play it one way or the other - he played it that way.

As for VAR - there have been so many operas in soccer that it is absolutely mandatory. Maybe some fine tuning is needed, but the referee himself reviewing what happened is mandatory.

What I can't understand is hydration breaks. I know, it's for ads, because us 'mericans can't live a full 45 minutes without ads.

But hydrating while playing was part of the game. Players used to catch water pouches while running, and chugging them while playing. Part of the game.

FIFA has painted itself into a corner. They stick to the red card, then the USA screams bad call. They reverse the card, the rest of the world screams its unfair, two sets of rules, the WC is rigged.

In pro sports there ARE two sets of rules. One for the superstars, one for everyone else. This whole thing is a mess. The whole world is supporting Belgium right now. Everyone across the globe is saying if the USA wins, its tainted. Can you imagine if the US wins 2-1 and Balogun scores both goals?

Does VAR handle this situaton?

I would have rather lost despite the bad call then win with it overturned.

If it was the head of the US soccer federation making the call it may have been ok...but it wasn't.
