Word experienced an error

Hi all.
Please help me to solve my problem with Microsoft Word 2013. When I try to open .docs format file, an error message occurs "Word experienced an error trying to open the file." , and the file couldn't be opened properly. So my question is, how to repair word docx file? Hopefully someone will be able to help me with this.

.docs ?? Or do you mean docx?

Make a copy of the file that won't open, then change the .docx in the file name to just .doc and see if Word will open it.

If you can't open the file try renaming the file to something that ends with .doc.

I thought .docx was the more universal extension?

Either way, just try changing it to .doc or .docx.

Don't think I've ever seen a .docs

A .docs isn't a correct file extension for Word. If the file extension is correct then you need to contact whoever created the file and ask them what you need to use to open it.

.docx is a Word XML document, and became the default in Word 2007.

Either way, just try changing it to .doc or .docx.

Not sure about docx files but I've had luck with Open Office opening doc files that Microsoft Word couldn't.

If really desperate the other option was to open in Notepad. There will be lots of formatting gobbledygook but you can usually recognise and recover the text.

In the file dialog instead of clicking open drop the choices down and you'll find open and repair which may help.

Oh, I am sorry. Of course .docx format file...not a .docs. I have tried to rename the file to .doc. No luck.
Open Office also does not want open the file.

This will almost certainly work but you will remember years from now how not fun it was to manually extract the text from the file.

I'd try opening it with LibreOffice (instead of OpenOffice) and I'd try uploading the file to Google Docs; all after making two copies of the file and renaming one to .doc and the other .docx. Try all options with both files.

To get round this – right click on the file and select properties. Next click unblock. If it useless http://www.docx.repair/
