Wolverine Pan Heaters?

Looking through the list of BITOG sponsors, the Wolverine oil pan heater caught my eye.

It seems like an excellent idea/product. Anyone who uses it care to share opinions and experiences with it?

Is it something you plug in over night? Or, say, 30 minutes before driving?

It only rarely gets below 20 deg. F. where I am, but anything that can reduce engine wear to some degree is of interest.

For GA, more bother than it's worth.

Almost no one is Southern New England uses these (North a different story)

OT:My brother lives in Alaska and uses a one under the dog's water dish.

How cold does it get in GA? I agree with simple_gifts. I generally only use mine at below 32F. For that I really like it and generally leave it plugged in all the time. Starts a lot easier on those really cold mornings.

I probably won't bother with it. I just wondered if anyone uses them and what they thought of them.

It definitely gets below 32F in the winter here, but only very rarely below 20--probably an average of 6-8 days per year.

And cold pumpability is one reason I use Redline.

I think cold = ( not hot ) in the South.

If you are using Redline you are all set. I would use 10w30. No need for warmers, additives, or anything else. Just use a good filter, Wix for one.

Modern oils (especially the lighter weights) have improved so much in the area of cold pumpability, oilpan heaters are really a waste unless temps drop to 0 or below. I used a pan heater on my vehicles in Wyoming when temps regularly dropped well below 0 with great results, but I think you may be wasting your efforts in Georgia.
