Given that I've worked on both of the Citroens that Mr. Boyle has, and multiple other 602cc powered cars, I am not really surprised of the level of contaminates in the oil. It surprises me that it isn't higher given the method used to attach the air cleaner assembly to the carburetor; actually, it surprises me that something like a box-elder bug hasn't made it's way into the engine given the car's air cleaner fitment! Everyone I've seen in the last decade is like that, too. I guess one could equate the 2cv's air filter system to that of the "rock-catcher" oil filters we've read about on here.
I don't see any issue with the viscosity of the oil for this engine either; I'd keep running 15W-40 in it because anything thinner than it has caused increased oil consumption through burning it off. Seeing how this little engine turns 6000+ rpm at highway speeds I see no need for a thinner oil to be used given the oil pressure is adequate the way it is. This engine is used and has sat for only God knows how long so I'm sure there would be some amount of deposits in there that the Wolf's Head is cleaning out. It would be interesting to see how the trend continues as more miles are accumulated on the car. Put it to the floor, Ben!
BTW, what rpms does a Beetle engine run at while cruising 60 mph? I bet it is substantially lower than a 2CV.
