Does it make any funny noises on startup? Did it before you used the WH? As a bug lover, I have always admired the 2CV from afar. Was the engine been driven hard at a certain point?

This engine is actually a used one I installed about a year ago. It actually sounds fine and is one of the fastest 2CV engines I've ever seen. I also have a Beetle as well. This engine has had Valvoline, Wolf's Head, and Rotella in it and it behaves the same with any of them. I get a good price on the Wolf's Head and it looks to me like the Wolf's Head is adequate for the job.

Great car! Does it have an "Oil-bath" air filter? Also the insolubles seem high. Does it have a screw-on filter or just a screen?

Absolutely no clue, I bought it an estate auction of all things and then ultimately had to use it after my other 2CV engine had a massive failure. I just got a UOA done for the curiosity factor.

Maybe the 15-40 is a bit heavy? I used 10-30 in my air cooled VW bugs(59, 66 and 67) year round with good success. And remember that was without an oil filter and an oilbath air filter. Also Check with the 2cv forums.

Everybody in the 2CV world runs 15-40. I have run 10-30 in my 2CV and my Dyane at different times and I see the oil light flicker at idle and this never happens with 15-40.

Given that I've worked on both of the Citroens that Mr. Boyle has, and multiple other 602cc powered cars, I am not really surprised of the level of contaminates in the oil. It surprises me that it isn't higher given the method used to attach the air cleaner assembly to the carburetor; actually, it surprises me that something like a box-elder bug hasn't made it's way into the engine given the car's air cleaner fitment! Everyone I've seen in the last decade is like that, too. I guess one could equate the 2cv's air filter system to that of the "rock-catcher" oil filters we've read about on here.

I don't see any issue with the viscosity of the oil for this engine either; I'd keep running 15W-40 in it because anything thinner than it has caused increased oil consumption through burning it off. Seeing how this little engine turns 6000+ rpm at highway speeds I see no need for a thinner oil to be used given the oil pressure is adequate the way it is. This engine is used and has sat for only God knows how long so I'm sure there would be some amount of deposits in there that the Wolf's Head is cleaning out. It would be interesting to see how the trend continues as more miles are accumulated on the car. Put it to the floor, Ben!

BTW, what rpms does a Beetle engine run at while cruising 60 mph? I bet it is substantially lower than a 2CV.
