Just saw a 1999 and I may jump on it. Thoughts? Fuel Economy?

However... the 199x-1998 generation version MAY win by default, since the parking brake could dig into a larger person's thigh (it is on side of passenger seat in 99-onward, not so in up to 1998.)

My WJ never let me down once. The fuel economy is eh, mine had the 4.7 and averaged 17 mpg. Best I got was 19. They're easy to work on for the most part, parts are cheap. The only thing I didn't like about mine was the 99-01 Teves brakes were prone to warping the rotors, though I put new brakes on it and they never warped in the 50k I put on them. The steering stabilizer is another thing to go bad. They're cheap too.

I guess I like 'em. Economy on any of them is blah.

If you want better economy without all the bells and whistles to break with great reliability, go with a regular XJ Cherokee.

My kid's '89 (it's Renix injected, you may want to find a newer HO) still gets 20 if you drive conservatively.

The Teves calipers (if so equipped) may need to be upgraded to Alebono calipers. The 4.0 engine has problems with piston skirt's cracking.

I love my Jeep, but had to deal with both of the above. The caliper upgrade is covered in a Jeep TSB and the piston skirt problem does happen.

Didn't you just buy the one from the other thread that you started?

Be glad that you will not be seeing any more Subaru threads from him now :-) My count shows he had "almost purchased" about 17 vehicles so far +/- 3 :-)

Although I consider broken skirts rare, I find this issue more prevalent in the '96+ 4.0L/2.5L engines.

The Renix/OBD1's seem to be OK.

IMHO one of the last good non-wrangler Jeeps. Solid front axle , solid drivetrains and a little more creature comforts than a XJ. As others have said fuel economy is not very good , however they are pleasant to both own and work on. If the price is right I'd say buy.

Not expensive to repair but you can expect no better than 16-18 mpg with the 4.0 in the city and 14-16 with the 4.7L. It has been my experience that the 4.0 is very reliable. I have no major issues but do have a few fluid leaks (rear main seal, t-case). They have leaked for years and as long as I keep them full there have been no real issues.
