This is the first time I have cut open oil filter, I used a dremel and yes butchered, I have always used motorcraft oil filters on my 2016 f150 5.0. Just recently did an oil change on this truck, I thought I would give a wix filter a try, when I started the truck after the oil change I notice a tic sound that was not there before, the truck ran good no problems other then the tic noise, I put up with it for a few days and replaced filter with fl500 motorcraft and the tic is gone. I cut open the wix filter to see if there was anything out of the ordinary. Please watch the vid and let me know your opinions please and thank you

Interesting. I usually use the FL500S Motorcraft on my 2018 Edge. Bought a WIX instead from RA because with the rest of my order the Motorcraft filters would have cost me additional shipping. Never used a WIX filter before in my life. Maybe I made a mistake?

Just to clarify things, this isn't about trashing wix filters, I know a lot of guys that swear by wix filters. This is just my personal experience using a wix filter, I'm not a oil filter engineer, just thought I would share this to gain some knowledge.

Thank you

So what’s the issue? The black stuff didn’t come from the manufacturing process, it came from inside your engine. The good news is it appears the filter caught quite a bit of stuff, like it’s supposed to. I’d cut your OCI to half for a couple changes & try an oil with Group IV & V to do some cleaning.

Or, buy a quart of the appropriate HPL Cleaner oil & run it for the full (half-mileage) OCI, then cut the Motorcraft open & check again.

That filter was on for 3 days, I think that's sloppy glue from the factory, if you watch whip city wrench guy that cuts open oil filters he has made comments on certain oil filters with sloppy glue from the factory

Yeah, that's glue slop on the end cap ... nothing from the engine. Stuff from your engine doesn't adhere itself like that where it has to be broke loose from the surface with a fingernail.

I have a motorcraft fl500s on there now, will cut that one open in few months . Thanks for all the replies and suggestions

Wix is,was.old school desirable filter because it was USA made,Dana family made it,had silicone adbv, and much better efficiency than oem.that was according too mechanic I met once1992 Mobil station,as I just got my liscense. I've used wix, over a year ago.very nice filter! But....M&H bought them..their almost all made in china, venezuela, poland, some other place.some socialist and communist regimes. I refuse too buy wix now and support that.its globalization nonesense, and supporting communist china,or socialist venezuela. Only other equivalent for now, would be Napa gold. Its also M&H, but USA made. If not then next would be purolator pureone.Ide say.

I was reflecting back, that day with mechanic.I was17. He looked like a smaller redhead Jimmie hendrix, only white.or that art guy that was on tv making paitings, with beatd.kinda looked like him but red orange beard n hair, all 1970s curly bushed loofad lol. He was cleaning his ratchet, socket and I asked him about filters.what he toldme..in my post. We had a 1991 GM Saturn sl1 I think it was.low mileage..he was either OEM only, or wux.he didn't Like frams, cardboard endcaos.didn't like Napa holds because of the separate adbv thing between the filter and adbv. Oil might and prob slipped past it. I keep thinking,he mentioned the upf filters GM had then, the synthetic media. Vaugly remember now. but feel n think he liked that or oem,if none available, then wix.nothing else.
Of course today, its different.but we all hete, see the design flaws purple for pure ones are now known for, filters being outsourced made.mass produced cheaper.that means quality going downhill. Everything is taking us,for some, back too factory oem made. In GM case, its AC delci.ford,motorcraft,ext.efficiency will never be near 99%@20um,but at least they won't rip, tear, overglued, funky stuff on media, or made with cheap half slave labor!

Quick question... Many of you are listing a NAPA Gold as a better alternative to the Wix. Is NAPA Gold not manufactured by Wix anymore? I always thought they were the same filter.

You are correct, WIX = Napa Gold.

This particular filter is a Purolator PureONE in WIX clothing.

The sloppy glue is not really an issue and has been seen in all brands, including Motorcraft filters which are also made by Purolator. As for the startup tick, that is difficult to explain because there's nothing visually about this filter that would explain it. A failed ADBV would be a common cause for startup noise, but this one seems to be intact.

Looks like it’s kinda hit and miss now days from top to bottom. Great filter one time and not so good the next. Another excuse for short oci’s or longer ones if no problems with the filter?

The motorcraft fl500s has a base end bypass valve, the wix has a dome end bypass, I noticed that both motorcraft and wix have the same base plates, wonder if mann Hummel bought out puro and wix ?

They did several years ago.
