I just went to Oreilly and bought a Wix oil filter. I opened it up when I got home to look at it (doing my oil change next week). When looking into the large middle hole (where you can see the filter media through the tiny core holes) it`s all even except for about an inch where it looks like it`s smushed up against the outer can. Should I return this filter? Is there a defect in the media?

Every oil filter I've seen has a uniform appearance on what you can see inside. I'd at least go back to the store and compare it to other Wix filters.

If anything, you can return it for peace of mind. Personally, I would return it if only for that reason.

Not sure if I follow you, but are you saying the spacing isn't uniform or even of between the pleats ... the pleat ends you are seeing through the center core holes? If so, many filters will not have exact and perfect pleat spacing all the way around the filter.

It`s really weird,if you look through the center hole, you of course can see the pleats, and all are perfectly even. Then suddenly the pleated filter media is smushed up against the back wall of the outer can for about an inch, then the media pleats return back to where you can see them again. And that inch of smushed media isn`t pleated,it`s completely flattened out. I think I`ll return it tomorrow and continue to use the blue Japanese Nissan oem filters.

I must have a horseshoe on me that I don't know about. As may filters as I have screwed on I have not seen a problem with a Wix. Maybe I just don't look??

I'm trying to figure how you can see that much detail through the tiny holes in the spiral core center tube. Now if it was an Ecore? No problem.

I'm impressed.

I took it back and got a Nissan filter. The filter media in that particular Wix looked really sloppy!
