Ah, I misspoke - BPV takes up room previously occupied by media, not crazy about that. Not the end of the world, but if I had my rather's.

Looks fine to me, though unknown fci ( I don't see it) leaves out an important point of information with any post use dissection.

This one typical Wix labeled, Napa Gold construction with thread end metal spring bypass.

Thanks for c&p.

Out of curiosity I measured the approximate difference in internal filter height between a Wix 57055 and a Fram 7317 series filter (or Subaru OEM oil filter), the Fram is about one-third of an inch taller. I hypothesize that this may contribute to why the Wix has a slightly higher bypass setting versus the Subaru OEM, 27 vs 23 psi.

No, Ignatius, it has the 27psi rating on the (5)7055 is because that's what FB25s call for. EJ25s which use a 7712 (nominally, these things are TINY!) call for a 23psi rating, which the 7712 has. Not that it particularly matters when you're comparing stock to a better-flowing media, though. But I use the 7055 on my EJ25s as well so I only have to buy a single filter for all my Subies.

I ask what I am about to ask not to start an argument but rather to clear up any misunderstanding that I may have. When you say that 27psi is what the FB25 calls for, is this for this specific Wix filter or for say the OEM filter in general? I am not aware of Subaru changing their OEM bypass spec for their OEM filter so I suppose I am wondering if the OEM filter is considered inadequate in that aspect? It is not a filter I choose to use aside from the one that came on the engine from the factory.

I've got nine Wix 57055 filters to use on my 2021 Outback and one Fram XG7317 left over from the Outback I traded in for the new one. So we'll both be using the same filter for a while SRR ✌️

OEM, it's what the factory blue can is rated at AFAIK. May be incorrect, but who knows. It's a small difference, between EJ and FB, but for some reason undisclosed they have made a change. No thought of you arguing, since there's not much rhyme nor reason to why Subaru bypasses are generally double what other manufacturers require, with no public info on the "why". (y)

Best theory (as you know) is the high volume oil pump used in most Subarus along with the OEM filters probably being relatively flow restrictive. The more free flowing the filter is and the lower the max flow volume, the lower the bypass valve can be set.

If that was the case, Fram who supplies the service filters for Subaru of America would list a tweaked 7317 filter. They do have a PH9715 for the EJ engines with a different BPV pressure setting compared to a 6607. That blue AA15A filter is basically a Extra Guard at its core.

Fram specifies the 7317 filters for all Subaru FA/FB engines.

I was talking about OEM Subaru filters. Even though Fram makes them, it could be the media is different (per Subaru specs) and more flow restrictive, thereby requiring a higher bypass valve setting.
