I wanted to replace this and cut it open mainly out of curiosity but also to insure my coolant flow to the filter was correct.

Yeah, pretty clean, as expected, but boy was the difference obvious when you looked at the coolant in the over flow tank. I wish I had taken a Before photo to show it, but after the 1500 miles it looked like brand new coolant.
I replaced it with a Fleetguard WF2107 which is listed as the correct crossover (with no SCAs) as I got a much better price on them than the Wix.
However its important to note it has no internal restrictor like the Wix and Baldwin does. My filter head has a restrictor built into it, so I had no qualms about using it, but, it could be an issue if yours doesn't.

I also prefilled the filter with RMI25. Last time I tried to use RMI, I poured it in the overflow, which is where it sat pretty much the entire time. It never mixed into the coolant. Not enough mixing going on in there I guess.
I thought I might try dosing it into the filter and that worked spectacularly. Its now throughly mixed in.
Bonus pic

This is an example of the trash I get out of the cooling system everytime I drain it. This is leftover from the last time I drained the coolant on it.

Do you happen to know where that debris comes from? I saw similar debris in the overflow tank when I changed my coolant a month ago.

Is it really coming from outside or is it possibly sand from the casting process that was too stuck to wash out?

I wonder if that debris would damage anything circulating around...

There is probably some casting sand. I think more is rust particulate (this car did not have the coolant changed in the first 10 years/150k miles....it was gross when I drained it.)
And silicate drop out. If you vehicle uses old green or the Yellow or Mopar Orange G-05, these silicated coolant can have after extended use, the silicates in the coolant precipitate out.
