My friend just bought a used 9" chipper with an air cooled Wisconsin engine. He is bringing it over to show me and we are gonna service it before it goes into us.

I have a jug of Rotella 5w40 and some Castol Classic on hand, a long with tons of 0w30 and 5w30 Syn. Recommendations?
Oil filter?

Thanks in advance.

Are we talking about one of those old V4 Wisconsins? They would have taken 30 weight oil back on the day. They're not picky about oil. The Rotella will be fine.
Just talked to my friend. He bought a 2002 Bandit chipper. I will see it tomorrow morning. I think the Rotella T will be good for a dirty old tree trimmer engine. Thanks for your advice.

Yep, Wisconsin air cooled V4. She loved the Rotella Syn. The air filter looks like an oil bath but is not. I am enjoying learning about this engine. It is a replacement and seems to be a torque monster for the 9" blades. Art got new blades and installed them yesterday. Sharp!

I've only tinkered on one of these VF4 (I think) engines once a long time ago. From what I've read, the oiling system is super primitive with splash and spray nozzles (on the rods) doing most of the work.
