School me some on wireless routers & recommendations. I'll need one to go with the new laptop. It will be for home use. I thought there might be some decent deals this weekend.
Personally, I'd pick one with Broadcom or Atheros (now part of Qualcomm) chipset. Look up the brand and model you want to buy and its revision number on the box (sometimes you have to look at serial numbers). Then look at dd-wrt.com and see if they are supported and what chipset they use.
Even if you are not using open source firmware, the major chipset brands like the above tends to be more stable than no name chipsets.
I have one I bought at Wal Mart last year for about $39.95. Rock stable, fast, and has WPA2-PSK encryption, the usual features. Its not the fastest nor the slowest. Its not true Draft N protocol, but I get 150 Mbps connections to my laptop 24/7 with only occasional drops to 135 Mpbs once in a while.
I like the Vizio you get at Wallymart. Its got 3 wireless sections, one for media (dual band N) one for other newish stuff (N&G) and one for older (B).
It took areas of the house (and outside) from no signal to full signal. I have it broadcasting both G and N due to one older laptop and the Wii gaming console. Netflix works perfectly now through the Wii where it was inconsistent prior. We have had five wireless laptops online at once while watching Netflix and all worked perfectly. I just couldn't ask for anything better. Amazon had great deals when I got mine about two years ago. Not one single problem. If you're going all wireless N a step up model in this brand that broadcasts @ 5 instead of 2.4 might be more suitable.
Initially I bought a top of the line Cisco that cost more than twice as much and it was marginal at best, a real disappointment. It was returned and replaced with the Buffalo which outperformed it in every way. I'm sold!
Ironically that's the one I bought and returned because it performed so poorly. Boy the prices have come way down on those! The ten year old router that I was replacing did a better job. Perhaps I just got a bad one. Good luck with yours.
I feel a "I told you so" coming along then. Newegg has a 60-day return policy so we'll see how it goes. I suppose that is probably why they had it on their sale list.
About a month ago, after researching online & asking here at BITOG, I bought my first wireless router, a D-Link DIR-615(~$25 at Amazon). Some don't like D-Link, but mine was easy to set up & has worked flawlessly so far.

Ben,
No, not at all. That brand has a good reputation and it's highly likely I got a toad. It was $169 back then! It will likely serve you well.

Brought areas of the house into full signal from nearly none. Really nice performance.
I was looking at that one as well, but I wish they had DD-WRT working fully on it. It looks like a great router, but I need some of the features of DD-WRT like SSH and WOL.
