You're thinking of WEP encryption. WPA2 with AES encryption is secure (there are some theoretical attacts but nothing to worry about

Correct. The biggest threat to a WPA2/AES setup is a dictionary attack. And that being successful would be entirely the fault of the person who setup the router/AP.
Plus, at my house the guy parked out front with the laptop would have a hard time running his dictionary hack with it smashed in the driveway.
Don't think they have to be sitting outside your house. You would be surprised at the range a directional antenna can achieve.
There have been many people using Pringles potato chip and soup cans to greatly increase the signal strength.
