Advice, please on network/wireless routers........

I'm replacing my HP desktop with a Toshiba laptop (i5, W7 64-bit, n-wireless, etc.). I'm currently using a Linksys wireless router connected to the desktop so my Toshiba XP laptop that is kept downstairs can connect to the 'net.

I want to continue with wireless capability for the XP Toshiba, but I also want to be able to print from the XP Toshiba to our Canon MX850 that is connected to the desktop upstairs. Canon claims I can network using the ethernet connection on the printer.

So, what do I buy (if anything) router-wise to connect to my new laptop so the downstairs laptop can connect to BITOG AND print upstairs?

Did I confuse everyone?

Uh, nothing yet. Can I use it for networking in addition to 'net access?

I thought there were wireless routers and then there were network routers. The printer is not a wi-fi printer (or wi-fi capable).

Does it have multiple ethernet connections on the back? Then yes, it will work for that.

If you want to print from the desktop, simply make sure that the desktop is running when you want to print.

Setup a network share of the printer (same home group of course).

Then you add the printer to the laptop, and you can print whenever that desktop is on of course.

I have been doing it this way for years.
