Winter’s last gasp

Winter’s last gasp

Last? It's still mid-February.

So true. Canadians always hope that March means the end of winter weather but in reality the threat is always there until May. I have experienced a big snowstorm in Southern Ontario in late April before.

Yup, I remember sitting in a dressing room after a hockey game, March 1, 1989, and another player saying "Where's this global warming they're always talking about? Bring it on!"

It was -30°C outside. (We were playing in an indoor arena.)

We've had temperatures in excess of -20°C in early April.

We've had heavy dumps of wet snow (albeit short-lived) here as late as May.

And we got rained out camping in the Rockies in July one year. Heading into Calgary to dry out at a hotel, the rain turned to wet snow.
