175's are about as narrow as it gets for 14" tires it seems, my only other advice is actually measure how wide the contact area is for that size of tire. 5-10mm difference isn't uncommon between tire manufacturers for the same nominal size. Also have a look the "corner" of the tread, something sharp and square will bite better than a round corner.
Almost all snow tires run very soft sidewalls to help the tire stick even with choppy steering inputs, dulls the handling on pavement but its always a compromise.
If you have some new drivers a couple of skidding lessons in a parking lot might help them out too, especially if you have ABS so they know how it works.

Well folks, thanks for all the advice.

I've decided on the Dunlop Graspics from Wal-Mart. All the medium (and small) joints wanted $700+ for no-name steelies + un-branded winter's.

No effen' way I said. Wal-Mart will get me Dunlop Graspics mounted and balanced on new steelies for $638, taxes in. That's regular price, and from having worked there a number of years prior, these things always go on sale at the end of October (20% off typically), making the OTD price well under six-hundred bucks. Still a bit expensive, but I prefer having winter tires mounted on their own set of steelies (particularly so I can swap back to teach newer drivers worse-case scenarios).
