I'm sorry but, maybe I'm misunderstanding the weather in Texas. What kind/how much snow do you get in Texas? I did watch a Cowboy's game on TV yeas ago where it did snow during the game. I just don't imagine there being much other than some cold/little ice and some snow in TX. I realize there is a change in weather as even when my daughter lived in Phoenix there was a change. You can't be talking about the snow/low temps that the other respondants/members are talking about from where they live(Northern U.S. & Canada) are you?
I admit that I'm and idiot but, I just can't see an all-weather vehicle(AWD) with Blizak's or Alpine's in TX being a "must have". H-E double toothpicks, I get by with front wheel drive and all-season tires here in the N.E. along Lake Ontario and we get BLASTED! WHAM!

I do see 4x4 being a need/passion for the truck crowd. Love them Off-Roaders with a lift kit.
Trust me I'm not being sarcastic, I guess I just don't know/realize!

He's talking about his brother in law who lives somewhere in the mid west.
 
Spazdog, it sounds like your brother-in-law has a lot of money and little to talk about. With his attitude, I doubt he'll agree with anything you say. He won't take action unless it's "his" idea.

I'm just going to suggest that he get the new E-class 4MATIC. No perception of it being a "chick-car". Little if any Lake Erie snow problems (and none that can't be solved with a good set of quality winter tires). It's more expensive...sure. But if you got 40 grand to spend on unnaturally white and straight teeth....

The Forester is a chick car.
So is the Miata or the SLK.
Who cares?
Now, the Forester is obviously not a Pininfarina design, but Mercedes took its general look down to the next level with the GLK.
How do I know that the Forester is a chick car?
Well, I drove ours to work for a week after we had had the thing about a year and a half, and all of the women swooned over it.
They all wanted to ride in it, and they all wondered where we had bought it and what it cost.
Anyway, winter tires on narrow rims would turn the SLK into a useable snow machine.
Failing that, any Honda I've ever had on any tire I've ever used was pretty unstoppable in the snow.
Finally, if your BIL wants a Forester, tell him that the Japanese one is far less expensive than the one with the three-pointed star, and probably has a better AWD system.
Also, the XT would eat the GLK for lunch.

The primary purpose of the Beetle is to be a fashion statement so it's a chick car under any circumstance!

I dunno.
My wife drives a stick really well, owned one when I met her, and used several as her daily drivers until we bought the automatic Forester.
I realize that I have set myself up for an off-color reply.

Ditto on the wife who can drive stick. It was hardly a decisive factor for me, but I won't say it didn't help.

Females who can drive a manual are pretty common here because there are so many manual compact cars. Almost any new vehicle that is available with a manual can be easily test-driven with a manual at a local dealership. Three of my four significant girlfriends have owned manuals. One even had a Miata, and at that time she was far better at driving it than I. My mother and sister have both owned manuals and are competent. I also remember riding around in a lot of compact manuals driven by friends' mothers when I was a kid.

So it's not that I perceive women as people who don't drive manuals, it's simply that there's not much point in owning a Miata without one aside from feminine cosmetic reasons. The purpose of a basic roadster like that is to be involved in the drive. If that's not a primary consideration, then the owner is making a lot of sacrifices in practicality for the sake of style. An SLK automatic, on the other hand, isn't actually nearly as much of a chick car in my mind because it's probably a fairly luxurious ride. A single guy without kids or a retired guy using it as comfortable transportation wouldn't be unusual here.
 
foresters are only chick cars for 'certain' types of women, like gym teachers and field hockey players who wear flannel, ifyouknowwhatimean.
IDK why miatas are 'chick' cars; it's a RWD sports car that's affordable, why wouldn't a guy be into that?
my wife also is great at driving a manual, that's almost all we've had for years now.
my brother used to have a jeep wrangler w/ an auto (what a total piece of garbage that was); one of his friends saw it and says "oh, you have a GIRL jeep!" lots of lolz all around...
 
Wait, you said "summer tires"? I didn't catch "summer" the first time through. The guy is using "summer tires" in *any* snow and is complaining about issues? Um...duh. Is this the time of year where all the local TV stations try to protect people from themselves and place a reporter in front of a wrecked M5/vette/G35/WRX/SL55 which the owner attempted to drive with summer tires and totaled it?

It won't help any "chick car" status or ground clearance, but as others have said a set of winter tires on dedicated wheels (to save wear and tear on nice summer wheels - both from the winter itself and from mounting/remounting tires seasonally) may change his outlook considerably.

Your BIL is a $#@% idiot. Anyone concern about his vehicle being called a chick car shouldn't have bought such vehicle in the first place. It's called research and filtering things out. He bought a car because you suggested to him? I never buy things people suggested. I may ask questions about reliability concerns in certain make/model but that's because I tend to keep my vehicles until they won't work anymore; therefore, I don't have a war chest of information on various make/model available. I own 2 vehicles and probably will have them for 20 years for the newer one and 10 years for the vehicle currently already have 20 years under its belt. Anyone vehicle not making it past 5 years of ownership is purely a waste of money.
