I have a leaking gasket on my drain bolt so I was thinking of just changing the oil out now too. I have a supply of free Tection Extra 15w40 that I have been using. Do you think I should get a 10w30 or a 5w40 for the winter or just run the 15w40?

Pennsylvania? Get a 5w30 or something like that. You might get a few days when the temperature really drops a lot.

For my area, there is a lot of temperature change. Yesterday I was in Big Bear and drove through San Bernardino.
It was 28F degrees in the first location and 90F degrees in the second yesterday, and these places in a straight line are about 25-30 miles apart & in the same county.

IMO....For a Diesel/Gasoline application on an older vehicle....10w-30 Shell Rotell T5 would do...just fine. For Gasoline applications, on an older vehicles, Shell Rotella, Diesel Dino, Triple Protection 10w30 and a quart or 2 of synthetic in 5w30, as a top off, would also work fine.

+1

If it is a gas engine? I {myself} would pour in a synthetic 5w30 or 0W-30...

If it is a diesel engine? I [Myself} would pour in a synthetic or semi-synthetic 10w30 or 5W-40...

Now if your truck is kept in the garage overnight and only outside during the work day... I would just use the free 15w40...

But If your anal like myself... You can pour in the lighter viscosity oil yr round...

With your possibility for -20°F winter cold, I'd use a 5W-40 synthetic oil, plus the water jacket heater and maybe also an engine sump heater is you must drive that truck in the coldest weather.

What viscosities are suitable for your Duramax engine? If a 30 wt is allowed, a diesel rated 0w30 or 5w30 would be excellent choices if you won't run that oil when the daily max temperature exceeds whatever your owner's manual allows.

First get one or a few Oil-Tite drain plug gaskets. They are the best and will last a few oil changes. Metal outside and rubber inside. You can remove the drain plug when the engine is cold, put your thumb there, swap the washer and screw it back on. Might help to have helper to swap the washer, or go reaching for it if you dropped it.

You will loose maybe 2-4 OZ if you are quick. Avoid needing another beer in the middle of the washer swap.

I would save the 15W40 for summer and go with a 5W30 or 10W30. The viscosity chart is always good to go by.
