Winter Low Temps oil recommendation

The road salt's eating your Honda away faster than the acid in the oil is eating the engine.

Walmart should have Esso XD-3 0w-40 in stock, and they should also stock Castrol "GC" 0w-30 as well. That's where I get mine in Vancouver, anyway.

Cheers
JJ

Vilan,
I didn't really seek 0W30s as they seemed to be much more expensive and/or didn't have much choice. I'll check again the next time.

Not sure about the "Motomaster" brand.

jaj,
Of course, salt is the killer. That is why I spray at Krown for protection from corrosion every autumn. I use this vehicle for the toughest days (lots of salt on the roads). Still I'd like to use it for a very long time.

I just bought 2 cases of Esso XD-3 0W30 at the Esso distributor. I found fantastic UOAs on this site (comparable to Mobil1). Also it is much cheaper, CAN$ 5/litre (including taxes). The Esso specs state expected temps down to -40C and pour point around -50C, which is what I wanted.

I am good now

Esso XD-3 is usually available at Walmart in Ontario in 3 grades:

0w30 Full PAO Syn - probably the right choice for your vehicle

0w40 Full PAO Syn - whay i use in my Porsche

15w40 HDEO Dino oil - what I use for warm weather in cars I am running AutoRX.

Last prices I saw were $21 CDN for the Syn and $11 CDN for the Dino for 4 litre jugs. An Esso bulk dealer will sell for maybe 15% less but you usually would need to buy 12 litres.

I don't know if this oil can be beat. It is the single advantage we ave in Canada

peterr,

I have a thing against Walmarts and Costcos and other big box stores, so don't go there often. I prefer litre bottles which I found at the dealer because my engines use between 3.1 and 3.5 litres so I always have some left over from the jug. Also, with bottles I can make my own blends using as little as 1 litre.

thanks

XD-3 0W30 sure wouldn't be my choice for winter use in Ottawa; it's a very heavy 30wt with a CC Viscosity of 5900 @ -35C.
The best choice is M1 0W30 with a CC Vis' of only 3800 @ -35C. My second choice would be M1 5W30; 3600 @ -30C .
If there is a better winter oil than M1 0W30 I haven't found it; even M1 0W20 is heavier with a -35C Vis' of 4830!

I am using Mobil1 5W30 right now and have no complaints, good stuff.
However, Mobil1 is expensive. I can find 5W30 on sale (not often) for as low as $6/litre. I don't remember 0W20 and 0W30 prices; certainly didn't find them on sale yet. I am sure their prices are around $8 or $9 per litre. XD3 cost me $5/litre including taxes.

So Mobil1 at worst it double the price and at best 25% more expensive. That being said, I'll consider blending in M1 0W30 or any other oil with better CCS with XD3. I couldn't find CCS and other info on the Mobil web site?!?!

Changing oil once a year is so inexpensive that I say go with the best oil for your situation. In other words, forget cost. In your climate, I'd use a low viscosity, high viscosity index, 30-weight synthetic for sure.

JAG,

I should clarify.
The CRV is the primary vehicle for bad weather. I also have a car, Mazda Protege. The last machine is a snow blower. So it adds up to about 9 litres per winter.
Moreover, I would like to blend in some 0W30 XD3/Mobil1 for the cars during spring/autumn, so that is another couple of litres.

It adds up.
