I'm driving the old school subaru these days. Shift on the fly, dual range 4x4 tranny. Somehow I prefer it to the AWD Legacy I used to own. After last years heavy snow fall, I didn't want to take any chances this year in case we really get some bad weather.

A better tire, while still being an excellent value is the General Altimax Arctic (aka Gislaved Nord-Frost 3). The Winterforces are much better than an all-season in the snow/ice, but they are nothing special. They are getting quite old actually. TireRack put studs on a set of Winterforces and they were worse on the ice than the newest studless tires out there.

I too get the sense that the Winterforce is the bare minimum, lowest common denominator in a lot of tire tests.
It's one thing to be impressed with a Winterforce compared to (possibly worn out) all seasons, but it would be another to be impressed compared to other higher-end snow/winter tires.
Either way, even if they're winter force, do yourselves a favour and get winter tires if you actually experience winter in your area.

Considering my Bridgestone RE-92 all-season tires are pure junk, I'm actually quite satisfied with their Blizzak offerings.
The tirerack comparison is on ice...
On snow at least i feel that winterfoce is as good as x-ice IMO...

You're making a generalization that all Firestone tires are prone to tread separation. That is inaccurate, but you're allowed your opinion.
Firestone tires have been OE tires on countless vehicles, however the tread separation issue was notably found on the explorer was reasons already stated.

I just bought a set of 4 Winterforce UV's for my Expedition. It was down to a set of the Firestones or Blizzak DM-Z3's, but the Firestone store wanted $35 more per tire for the Blizzak's, and I only need the winter tires for this year and next winter maybe, so I went with the value option. I currently have a set of Winter Dueler DM-Z2's, but they are 8 years old and have only 1/2 the tread remaining so it was time.
With state tax included, the price at the local Firestone store was within $1/tire of the delivered Tire Rack price, so I bought 'em at the store instead. I've run the older Firestone Winterfire snow tire on some of my other cars, and was pleased enough with them, so I think I made a good decision.

So I put these tires on the wagon yesterday. No snow yet, but looks like the temps will be dropping down for the winter season now. Very pleasantly surprised at how quiet these tires are on the road. I was expecting at least a little humming on the pavement but they may be a bit quieter than my all-seasons. They definitely are softer and have a higher rolling resistance, but not quite the compromise I was expecting.
