Glass isn't the easiest thing to polish, especially if you are trying to correct pitting. Cerium oxide will work with a rotary polisher to remove lighter scratches, but pitting will require a fair bit of skill and effort.
Probably better to consider replacing the windscreen.

Sometimes it may appear to be pitting but actually be particles adhering to the windscreen. Try using a razor blade and clay bar first. After which, use a common glass cleaner. See if that makes it any better.

I saw a YouTube Video where the windshield glass was first cleaned with DRY(Not Wet) Steel Wool grade "0000"
Then washed, and then Rain-X'd. I've never tried this myself but, looks easy enough

If the glass has what are pits from sand then nothing can be done with it . You're best to have a rock crack it and replace .

I tried Cerium Oxide a long time ago on a windscreen that saw a good bit of acid rain in Hawaii, and it didn't help one bit. At best, it will work for very light scratches in glass. It's actually better for cleaning up bug and bird residue that is baked on the glass.

What added benefit to the windshield is there to doing it dry? Nearly all polishing that I've been involved with includes using a lubricant. I would not give much weight to that YouTube video clip.

If you have glass coverage just get a new one.
Rain-X is a wax for glass. Have you tried some to check for any improvement?
New windshield for my car is $230. I tend to replace it when it gets pitted to the point I can't stand it. Even with aquapel and extremely good car care the Subaru windshield angle appears to be perfect to become sand-pitted from the highway.

In the north east windshields are a wear item if you do a lot of highway driving.

Absolutely correct! Pitted glass is, in essence, 100% impossible to polish. I've done some telescope mirror polishing. It takes hours to accurately remove a few millionths of an inch. I can't imagine how long it would take to polish 10 thous of an inch over the entire windshield surface.
Often times, an aftermarket, imported windshield can be installed "cash" for a very low price. I've done this many times. Once for $150. It's worth every penny.

Absolutely correct! Pitted glass is, in essence, 100% impossible to polish. I've done some telescope mirror polishing. It takes hours to accurately remove a few millionths of an inch. I can't imagine how long it would take to polish 10 thous of an inch over the entire windshield surface.
