I can load and update the recent updates but one minute later the EXACT SAME updates are showing up again on the lower left icon. One of the updates in Security Essensials. Any idea what is going on? thanks

Download dial-a-fix , flush the software distribution, check all boxes and run it. Then reboot your machine. Should fix it

1. Microsoft Security Essentials update pkg KB 2691905

2. Microsoft Silverlight KB 2636927
.............................
I can download/install then they reappear in the yellow update shield after I install and restart the computer. The install is successful but they reappear time after time.

OK on my XP box just ran windows update manually (web). Microsoft Security Essentials update pkg KB 2691905 was installed automatically on May 1, I had Microsoft Silverlight KB 2636927 waiting. I check updates every day, so the silverlight update just came out. Installed fine. no reboot required. You should check the frequency of your updates, sometimes there are dependencies, and if they pile up sometimes there are incompatibilities. Anyways I would launch "windows Update" from your programs, install the MSE update first, then the silverlight update. The MSE update may be hanging causing the other updates to be rejected.

Every once in a while my Vista box will gag on an update, but the XP box keeps rolling on. XP has been so reliable and performs so well it's scary. I've probably jinxed myself by saying this. I'm gonna miss it when its gone.

Well that didnt work after all. The "Security Essentials update pkg KB 2691905" showed back up when I click on the yellow shield. Its refuses to update. Tried everything. I did get the Silverlight update though.

Uninstall and reinstall MSE manually. CCleaner will increase your performance If you haven't noticed already. But you can configure it to clean even deeper.

CCleaner setup
Cleaner/Windows Tab
Check all boxes EXCEPT...
No checkmark/uncheck the following:

Internet Explorer saved passwords
Network Passwords
Windows Size/Location Cache
Wipe Free Space

Cleaner/Applications Tab
Check all boxes EXCEPT...
No checkmark/uncheck the following:
Firefox/Mozilla saved passwords: (whatever browser you use will be here)
MS AntiMalware

Under Options/Advanved I usually uncheck "Show prompt to backup registry issues", because I've used ccleaner for years and trust it. I also uncheck "only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 24 hrs". Because I only use this every so often when the system starts slowing down, so I want to get it all, then reboot. After cleans like this do an occasional disk defrag to tighten the files up, decrease disk access times.

Googling "Security Essentials update pkg KB 2691905" it is definately a problem getting it loaded on windows XP. I tried to delete Security Essestials to reload it and it wont not allow me to. I deleted my other security like Malwarebytes and that didnt do anything either. It seems like Microsoft would have a fix or patch or something if folks are having a problem with this particular KB 2691905 update. I'm not real good at computers so its a real hassle for me.

I feel the same way, I have XP and Win 7 and like XP a lot more than Win 7. When you tell someone that they think you're nuts. LOL

I see what you mean, people are having trouble. I suspect possible HIJACK Malwarebytes may help with that. Or..you need to upgrade to XP SP3. I threw this machine together to help you, installed the upgrade using XP SP3 ok. but honestly there really isnt much support for XP anymore. Sorry I couldnt be more help. Older versions of MSE HERE

I just looked at my update history... my old XP machine (running XP SP3) took that particular SE update without any issues back in April.

While you were googling, have you found any suggestions on how to resolve the issue?
