with a 13" MacBook Pro Retina.

I have no idea why I didn't do this sooner. Very uneventful learning curve. Worst part of the whole thing was getting Bellsouth e-mail to work. Seems that is ATT/Yahoo fault not Apple.

I'm particular about displays and usually have to go Fujitsu or Sony to get the gloss and clarity I like but this thing is amazing.

My dad jumped from a poor experience with Windows 8 to a new MacBook Pro with Retina Display. In fact, he just got it yesterday. He upgraded to the 3.something i7 processor in his. 256 GB SSD and 8 GB of RAM; it's a screamer. This (and an iPad they just bought last week) are their first Apple products, and he told me on the phone last night, "I have to admit, they make some really nice stuff." He especially likes the new magnetic power plug. He's broken a number of DC power plug systems...either the plug itself or the port on the system board. He really likes the magnetic port on the Apple that easily breaks away--and that easily snaps into place.

We have a 2007 unibody iMac and an iPad 4 in the house, along with two iPhones. Our next computer purchase will either be a MBP or MBA, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I will have to see what all the rage is about this retina stuff, because I like a good screen too, but as it stands I am happy with the screens on my Lenovos.

My 6 y/o Lenovo (15.4) has a 1680x1050 display and its crystal clear with a nice gloss finish. Always loved that display.

OP:

As a PC guy and a 25 year Hewlett-Parkard employee, I moved to an Apple MiniMac a couple of months ago. My wife has been on the Apple bandwagon for years. The entire family has iPhones, my wife an iPad as well. I installed an Apple Time Capsule when I got my MiniMac.

What amazes me most is how seamlessly all this stuff connects and talks with each other.

Mine is a Core i7 2.9 (Turbo boost to 3.6) with 512k flash storage and 8gb ram, Screamer is a good description of the speed. The 15" have quad cores but this one is a dual core with hyper threading.

Having had the power port broken twice on one of my Fujitsus by the dog catching the cord and dragging it off the end table I certainly see the advantage to the magsafe. It does take some getting used to as it is fairly easy to disconnect.

I guess it remains to be seen but I usually get 3-4 years out of a computer and I don't see me switching back next time around.

I like the iCloud/FaceTime/iMessage too. It all just seems to work without massive set up or intervention.

Yep, it just works.

My daughter and wife gave me a little push, my wife chose a 15" MBP earlier this year and has loved it.

I'll probably do a time capsule soon, particularly if it works as well as everything else.

In 1995 it would be a pain to switch between platform (even from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95), but in 2012, platform doesn't matter anymore. You can get whatever you want to do from the internet, and it would be insane for software developer to stay with only 1 platform.

Still, if you do more than just browsing and emailing, it is hard to move a platform. I have a bunch of quirky gadgets like PC104 boards, compilers, custom software I wrote, etc that I'll never move out of the Win32 platform unless you pry it out of my dead fingers.

Plus I'm cheap and use my hardware for 8 years on average.

Just did the same with a i7 Mac Mini and don't regret it either. Ever since we got our iPhone's a few months ago they've spoiled us. Everything just works as others have said. In less than 4 hours I had everything working on the mini including a Virtual Box with XP. Our printer doesn't work on the mini itself but it does work on virtual box.. and it's no slouch so that's not a big problem. Now just need to get a external bluray and more memory. If I was made of money I'd get another mini with the i5 to replace the htpc downstairs!

Congratulations. You won’t regret it. I was an Apple fan when it was cool, then when it wasn’t, and still am now that it’s cool again. I have used Windows and Linux and many other platforms to satiate my geek boredom and desire to learn. Of all I have used I have been most pleased with the Apple products intuitive nature. It is the only company that seems to put “how are people gonna want to use this” above all else.

I've been an Imac user for the past 3 yrs and also have a Macbook Air. I had fun partitioning the hard drive on the iMac using Bootcamp and installed Windows XP. So have the best of both worlds.

I'm still happily using my 2008 Unibody Macbook Pro. It was the first unibody machine Apple made. Don't see myself upgrading any time soon either.

Welcome!

I picked up the 15inch Retina MacBook Pro and it is truly amazing!

So powerful, stunning, and light/thin!

I can't imagine how nice and portable that 13 inch is!

Ran into a fellow IT business owner this past week, we swapped stories, but have the same story: use a MacBook as our goes-everywhere-with-us daily driver for everything computing, even to all Windows shops. Run Windows in a VM for Windows things for complete compatibility, then shut it off for ease of use.

Swap for a quality 256GB SSD, max the RAM, it will run for years without the need to upgrade every 3 years. I'm writing this from a 4+yo Macbook, runs like a champ.

Then again, I have two Dell laptops that are 5+ years old that are humming along just fine.

Enjoy your new laptop, it may be the last one you buy for a long while
