I purchased a Dell Laptop with Mcafee firewall installed on it . Now I am getting messages stating that my trial period is over and my firewall is off .

When I checked the status of the firewall it showed Windows firewall off and Mcafee Firewall "snoozing" .

I am unable to turn on Windows firewall as it seems Mcafee is controlling the settings and looking for me to purchase a subscription from them .

Is there a way to fix this problem ?

Uninstall McAfee. That's pretty common with the security applications, Symantec Endpoint will also make changes to Windows Firewall.

There are plenty of good free antivirus apps (AVG, Avast, Bitdefender) but people seem to get pretty worked up about the pro's and cons of each so I'll let others chime in on that.

Yep, I would uninstall McAfee (and uninstall any other bloatware while you're at it). I'm currently using avast! Free on one of the old laptops with no problems.

Thanks . I was worried that it was possibly a fake message from a virus program .

Is it a good idea to use windows firewall with the Avast free or is there a better option available ?

No, that's all you need. That's all I have ever done on my Win 7 netbook.

I wonder how the deal is done between the 2 companies . One gets a sales lead and one gets free software for their product ?

The bloatware and trialware makers pay (dearly) to have their garbage included on a windows install by default. The ransoms and warnings work often enough with unsuspecting users that they continue to do it. Thankfully, neither Apple nor any Linux distributions reduce themselves to doing anything that slimy.

This is one of the best things about getting refurbs.. usually they have a fresh clean OS on em.
