Will thicker oil help?

In my 96 Volvo 850 turbo with 272,237 miles when you accelerate hard it smokes some. It's enough to see in the rear view mirror but I'm not smoking up the entire road. The smoke is black. Is this extra fuel like on a diesel or oil getting past the rings? I noticed this while using Red Line 0w20 and Pennzoil Ultra 5w30. I was wanting to try Mobil 1 0w40 next. Will the heavier oil help? Would I be better off with Mobil 1 High Mileage? 5w30, 10w30, or 10w40 if so? Again can only see smoke if car is floored, but I'm using a little oil too.

Black smoke is unburned fuel not oil.
You've got some injector or ECU fuel calibration problem of some sort.
You're fuel economy should be terrible.

Black sounds like fuel/running too rich. I think blue is oil and white is antifreeze. Are your O2 sensors and the rest OK? Any CELs? At 272k, sensors definitely come into play.

How is the fuel compensated for boost? Is there an aneroid (ALDA) or is it an electric sensor?

Do you actually see consumption by reading the dipstick? If so, what is the consumption rate per 1000 miles?

Does your manual call for 30wt? Old turbo car I would say 40wt.
Unburn fuel could be, try some Techron maybe injectors gummed up a little, could be worn rings and turbo, 272k miles are not 27k

Def. try Mobil 1 0w-40, great oil, wouldn't hurt a thing for sure.

I get 22 to 25 mpg. I drive mostly interstate 75 to 90 mph. I drive 1200 to 1500 miles a week. Ive used about a quart in 3 to 4,000 miles. The cel did just come on a couple weeks ago. It's code P0440. It's a evap problem, but I noticed the smoke before that. I first noticed the smoke at night in the headlights of the car behind me.

Car calls for a range of oils, for all temps 10w30, but for mountains and high temps 15w40.

If you're correct that it's black smoke and not blue it's fuel and you'll need to get it checked out.
3,000 to 4,000 miles/quart is not bad for a high mileage car and it's not enough for oil consumption to be visable which btw is blue smoke.

Agree with CATERHAM. Are you sure it is only 1 CEL code?

How are your O2 sensors? A lazy one might allow you to go rich.

Im betting on some other sensor issue or boost compensation issue causing a default rich burn to protect the engine from meltdown...

I just changed the plugs a few days ago. None of the plugs were oily. They did have some white stuff on them, lightly covered. Plugs were worn normal. One of them had some oil in the thread area.

sounds to me like there is a turbo boost pressure problem

the black smoke is carbon particles caused by an excess fuel situation or a low boost (combustion air) problem

have the car scanned and check for boost leaks (intercooler piping)

could be a boost leak or problem with the MAP Sensor or MAF sensor, which ever one the car uses to measure incoming air to the engine.

Why hasn't anyone said to have the turbo checked ?

If it's never been replaced, that is a WHOLE lot of miles on a turbo, regardless of how it was beat on.

Not only fuel, but carbon blowing out can be the cause.

Rule out the turbo and take a look at the inlet and piping.
