Will Rat poison kill my dogs?

Rats and mice are eating the wiring under my hood. This is beginning to cause problems such as headlights that don't work and Alternators that won't charge.

Traps ain't working.

If I put Rat poison under my hood and a Rat eats it then dies and my dog finds the dead rat and chews/eats it will it poison him?

Sounds like you need a few cats or snakes around there.
I'm not sure if eating poisoned rats will kill a dog, but I would imagine it would not be good for them.
Ever think of coating all your wires with something that rats won't like? There used to be something called Bitter Apple that I bought to prevent my rabbits and ferrets from chewing on lamp cords and telephone lines.

Can't be good for the dog (it's not good for the rats). Ask your dog's vet for suggestions?

Yep, rat poison is an anti-coagulant (blood thinner like coumadin). It WILL poison dogs and cats and they will hemmorage and bleed to death. It is residual and the dead mice contain the poison which will poison the creatures that eat the dead mice. I've had great luck with glue boards. You can buy them most anywhere (4 for $1.29) at WalMart. Put them under the hood and the peanut aroma on the boards attract the rodents. They get stuck on the glue boards and you can safely dispose of the boards with the little furry creatures stuck to them. They've worked great for me and they're also good for brown recluse spiders if you have those in your area. My local exterminator, Serv-All, uses them for most all infestations of rodents and spiders. Good luck!

Those glue boards sound so inhumane though. I guess poison is too though. I prefer traps, quick- instant vs being stuck to something and thrown away

My parents put rat poison under their prefab house. It does have a retaining wall, so the dog cannot get in. But, the last dog started foaming at the mouth died without an apparent reason one day. I sometimes wonder if it ate something killed by the rat poision. My mom had a blood clot in her lung and has been on coumadin for a year and a half. She is now getting the generic version Warfarin, and found it was the same stuff used in the rat poison. Now she calls her blood clot medication "rat poision".

DO NOT USE RAT POISON AROUND DOGS!!! Okay, I'm done yelling. Seriously, be very, very, careful. My dogs (3) once got into only a tiny amount that was placed in a closet that I wasn't aware of. All three began vomiting blood and also had blood in their urine and feces. They all had to go to the vet for three days before they got well enough to come home. Very scary deal! I would say that they would suffer the same fate if they had eaten a dead rat/mouse that had ingested the poison. Get a cat or a small terrier, dogs are far too great of companions to die from poisoning.

Please don't use rat poison near your dogs.

I have heard that moth balls help keep mice away. Put them in coffee cans with holes in the lid or mesh bags and leave under the hood, on top of the tires and around the car. I never tried it but I have heard from others that it works.

I don't know if you're joking or partly serious about those cats. I know someone that had a similar problem, so he got himself some humane wire traps from a pet store, and caught a few cats....legally. He took them to the pound and let all the owners know where they were, if they wanted to save them. Never had a cat problem again.

Yes, Rat poison is bad stuff. My wife had a blood clot in her lung several years ago, they gave her the blood thinners mentioned above. This is very controlled and had to go for weekly checkup and tests to make sure she didn't get too much.

She wasn't allow to shave with a razor cause she could bleed to death. Also couldn't do anthing that would buise her since that would also cause internal bleeding.

Bad stuff. I woudn't want my dog to get into it.
