Will Amsoil 0w-40 be ok?

I recently sold a couple of ATV's. Now that they are gone, I've got four bottles of Amsoil Synthetic 4cycle 0w-40 left. My question is this; can I use them for my Ranger (5w-20 or 5w-30 recomended) if I was to reduce the overall viscosity by mixing a couple of bottles of Amsoil 5w-20 per two bottles of the ATV oil? The ATV oil doesn't have any friction modifiers, so does that really matter? Are there other things absent in this oil that I should know about? It does say on the bottle that it CAN be used in a car, but that it's not ideal. Any concerns that any of you folks would have doing what I propose? As a precautionary note, I will be keeping it to a 5k oci....just to be safe.

This oil is pretty thick and isn't friction modified as you know. The SG rating suggest to me high levels of zddp that would not benefit you and the TBN is not as robust as the other oils intended for extended drains in larger displacement engines.

You'd probably take a hit on the gas mileage and need to keep a short oci.

Only concerns would be poorer gas mileage, reduced oci and Amsoil designed this oil for equipment that doesn't typically have catalytic converters or emission control devices.

Surely you know some buddies with ATV's and out-door euipment that could use it?

Your engine might not rev as freely and seem to lack power also, maybe not.

Does your car burn oil?

If not - then the higher P levels won't be an issue and actually the bearing surfaces will be better for it.....

FM's really won't make a huge difference and the higher viscosity isn't what the manufacturer calls for. It probably doesn't contain the newest organic FM's found in the newer Auto oils.

You make the call - I cannot or will not "guarantee" this oil will be the best oil for your car - but I will say it should be OK.

Thsi question was answered on the Amsoil site

Q. Can I use AMSOIL AFF 0W-40 in my car or truck?
A. AMSOIL AFF can most certainly be used in cars or trucks but it is not our first choice for automotive applications.
AFF is specifically formulated for small recreational 4-stroke engines, and is an excellent choice for 4-Stroke outboards, ATVs, lawn equipment, snow blowers etc….

I already knew this (see my original post), I was just asking specifics not noted on the Amsoil bottle or web site. Amsoil only states that it's not a "first choice". I want to know why and what the differences/concerns/issues could be.
After what haley and pablo have said, I think it will be used on the lawnmower.

I don't hink anyone can give you the definative answers your are seeking. All they can do is offer opinion. Amsoil does not say you can't do it.

What I would do is add 1 qt per oil change or top of with a qt. Or give it to someone with a ATV.

btw-I just put some of the new 10W-40 MC oil in my 2005 Honda Rancher AT on Friday and in Sat's mail comes a recall on all 2004-05 Fourtrax ATV's. Inner and outer tie rod ends are defective and must be replaced. They are telling us not to drive them. Mine has around 100 miles and the steering is bad loose.

Mike,
Funny you mention the Rancher AT. I had one also. Didn't they have a recall on the PCM for the tranny too? Now the tie rods? Honda quality will take a hit on that one.

Should be ok? What, if any, differences exist between the ATV oil and the automotive type from Amsoil? Is it just the friction modifiers?
I suppose I'm just trying to get an informational answer. If any doubts exist about doing it, I'll just use it in my mower.

I can't find anything on this. Mine is only 4 weeks old. Was supposed to go a on big 100 miles +- trek with a group this Sat but that appears to be out of the question.

I like the 4x4 Ranchers, I had a 2001 without a problem..

btw-The tiny oil filter is pricey, about $12 from Honda dealer with discount. Very few other brands that can cross to the Honda filter.

Mike,
They probably fixed the PCM issue before yours was manufactured. I think it was just with the first few thousand units and only if you noticed transmission slippage at slow speed.
Yes, it's impossible to get the filter cheaper.
Enjoy the ride!
