I'm sure Apple could do all of that and probably will sell upgraded models in the near future. But to have all of the features that article talked about, get ready to also add this to the iPad. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Well, I think it's too early to declare it a success or failure.

But, for me it's too expensive. My kids love watching movies on my Iphone, I would have bought something like a touch with a bigger screen with a modest price increase. But this adds laptop features and a laptop price but doesn't do all the things even a netbook would do.

I might like one to use for taking notes in meetings, if the price came down.

This thing is 1.5lbs, 1/2 inch thick. The sleekness of the form factor alone will probably generate serious sales. And for corporate use, this is cheaper than any tablet we sell and the Iphone SDK is pretty easy to work with.

The laptop has a shelf life, and I guess Apple is trying to come up with the next big thing. I haven't read enough about the ipad yet. Heard mixed things about it. A guy from WIRED said it has a lot of potential.

"Is" not a success? Guys, it aint even for sale yet!

My iPod touch is such an amazing device, I never put it down...

Since Apple products generally have incredible resale value, I was seriously thinking about purchasing one, playing around with it for a few months, then reselling it on eBay.

This explains why they crippled MacOS a few months back so it wouldn't run on atom/netbooks.

Is the Atom powering the iPad?

No. The chip is one from a company they just purchased a little while ago. Per the apple website, "1GHz Apple A4 custom-designed, high-performance, low-power system-on-a-chip"
The Atom is an Intel chip.

Hope that helps.

I can see myself owning an iPad. It does everything my beloved iPod Touch does, but with a much larger display. The things that the iPad doesn't do are things that are not important to me.

My oldest son would most likely buy one. He loves his Apple laptop and iPhone. My daughter loves her iPhone as well but I doubt she would have one if it weren't for all the apps she has on it! She has stated this in so many words.
It's enough to make her rude to the point that she is always on it...doing something.....even when she is around family or friends.

What I know is that iPad is suppose to be a magazine reader and not a computer. It is not suppose to replace a computer or a phone, but something you put on a coffee table to read magazine and watch video with.

I think you can say that for $500, some people are going to try it out and see if they can remove all the magazine they have around the house, or if they are not a computer user (i.e. older people) who prefer to have an easy to use way to browse web (it does have a way to use a physical keyboard), then yes, it should work ok in those.

I'd think in a couple of generation or a few months, someone will start writing apps that allow it to do simple office applications and replace some office machine with this. For $500, it is a good way to replace a terminal machine, but my concern is that it is too easy to steal.

I wouldn't be surprise if Steve Job don't want to be dominated by Intel's direction, so he try to move the iPod Touch architecture up and make it more energy efficient and minaturize it.

$500 is a bargain coming from apple. If it is a Google Android system from Taiwan, it will probably be $350 like those Netbook (touch screen does cost something).

e-ink only use power when you switch context, so you can keep the same page there for months on one charge.
