Why stress out over "pleat spacing"?

Forgive my asking something that surely has been asked before and forgive my ignorance...

I've seen lots of posts here at BITOG by members who have opened their used filter to find the pleats either wavy and/or the distance between some pleats that differ in space.

What's the big deal? Is that a real concern regarding the condition of the used filter?

Thank you for the clarification!

Ed

Wide pleat spacing can cause added stress on the media due to oil flow. If the media can't take the added stress it can tear ... ie, the problem Purolator had/has.

Wide pleats means oil pressure/stress makes the pleat want to fold over witch in turn tears the media more easily.

As stated above, it is a strength and integrity issue, as well as a sign of overall quality control.
Machines can be calibrated to create very even and uniform pleat spacing. Sure you will get occasional wide pleats, but some manufacturers seem to have more of a problem than others with it.

In cartridge filters, you rarely see really wide/uneven pleat spacing, it is pretty uniform all around. The consumer can see it and if it looks bad, it won't be bought.

With canister filters, the average consumer will never see it, so some manufactures feel it is OK to skimp on that. If they skimp on that, what else are they skimping on?

When you get that much distortion its asking for trouble.
You can flex a number 2 pencil only so far and then what happens?

Is there any reason to be a Fram boy with the OCOD when Fram makes better products and so do others for not much more money???

Got it! Thank you for the explanations!

Weird, I've been lurking this site for a long time and have never seen this. I have seen you take lots of snarky little drive-by shots at Fram, though - what's up with that?
