this site is HUGE!! tons of members who have it bookmarked and log on numerous times a day.

so why are you (admins) so afraid of someone posting another sites link?? you think they'll find out that sites better and never come back??? thats just unrealistic.....

you really think its gonna hurt the sales of your current sponsors?? just cuz someone cant see "madeupwebsite.com" you think they'll never hear about anywhere else and therefore never end up buying their product?? that too is unrealistic...
we can talk about the product all we want but once we post a link to their website, that is crossing the line. that just does not make much sense. like you seriously think just cuz the link is blocked no one will try googleing it?? get real!


i think it just makes this website look "afraid". if not afraid of losing members (which wont happen) then afraid of making a sponsor mad??

i just dont get it....
 
Those are the rules to which you agreed when you signed up here. It doesn't make the site or administrators look "afraid".

If you don't agree with the way the site is run, rather than complain perhaps you should find another site that will allow you to post your links.
 
The admin will not allow website links posted, no big deal. However they do allow you to write it like oil dash store dot com, so just do it that way.

I don't agree with the afraid comment, they just don't want the link posted, and I'm sure they have their reasons.

It would be easy for another site to catch a free ride especially when selling product by linking to their site from here. 30,000 members here, nice for a small company to take a free ride to try and push product. I have to agree with the site owner in not allowing it.

Yes one could say that the sponsors might get more exposure. Honestly I think the small guys would benefit more, and it would cost them nothing.
 
All sites have similar rules. They don't want companies to use their forums for free advertising. Problem is, sometimes it's hard to tell when someone has a hidden agenda, so they just make a blanket rule. Different sites enforce it differently.

It's a very careful balancing act - walking the line between information and spam. If you look through the forums, there are many many instances of links that take you to other websites. We generally allow links to show information, but not links that just try to sell you something. Yes, it's very subjective, but we do the best that we can.

Can you imagine what the forums would be like if we just allowed anything to be posted?

I'm on a boating forum and occassionally someone will post a fake post or response that is really a sales pitch with a link....

With all due respect - and I mean that - I don't post on any other site that has this limitation.
I post to at least 50 or more sites weekly.
The only thing I see many do is to nuke email addresses to protect the users.
Not sure I grasp the rule here - but 100% I abide by it as it's your sandbox! :)
 
Maybe I can try and explain. Here we have BITOG, it is free to join if you agree to abide by the rules, however each member can choose to donate to help support the site. The site has sponsors, some large, some small. The small ones that come to mind are Pablo, Gary, Salesrep, etc. They pay a yearly fee to link to their websites and to be able to sell product if they choose. Now if someone post a link with a selling page, that company gets a free ride without supporting the site.

It's just that simple and the way it was set up from the beginning. Makes sense to me.

Johnny nailed it perfectly. I pay a fee here. Another Amsoil dealer comes along and starts posting tagged links.....say no more....

Like it or not, it's like that on all the other sites I post on as well.

Guitar/Bass sites don't allow sales types links at all. Motored bike sites, only if you are a paying sponsor, etc
 
Every site is different. BITOG seems fairly liberal about posting links to informative sites. Look how the old Kinsie family oil filter study pops up about every 2 weeks.

I spend a lot of time sharing what I have learned about dogs through my volunteer work with service dogs. Nobody knows more about caring for large breed dogs. On dog forums, questions on how much to feed a dog are very common. Many self proclaimed ''dog experts'' don't have a clue. I was taught how to determine that a long time ago. I frequently direct people to http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/RateYourDog.aspx Yet because the site is put up by Purina, the one site forbids me to post it. Of course, they permit unlimited amounts astroturf for the premium dog foods from those that don't admit they are part time reps.

I have a lot of respect for Johnny, Gary, PeteC, and others that admit their affiliation. I have nothing but contempt for those that use internet forums to promote products they don't admit having an interest in or companies that encourage it.
