according to my owners manual my 05 camry cannot use a 5w30 above temperatures of some 60F. How can this be when the whole of N.A. this is the most popular oil. 10w30 or up is recommended.

I guess now 5W30 is following in 5W20's foot steps on that side of the world, and is NG too. J/K

no it is an "older" recommendation i believe but even the latest 2AZ-FE's have the same recommendation...

R U sure you are reading the chart correctly? What does it recommend at temps 60-110F ? Well, GF4 5w30 sent my o5 RAV4 2azfe to an early grave at 57K miles, so I would tend to agree with Toyota unless its a good synthetic like Motul or Pentosin with a HTHS > 3.2 No one else will agree since their engine is running fine

ARCO, what exactly did happen to that engine? I know you basically said that your 1.5 died at 40,000 miles and it actually turned out that it was a noise coming from your timing chain guide and magically fixed itself.

This is the chart. was not reading it wrong except said 60 F instead of 50F (i don't do imeprial units well)

In another thread it was 20 weight oil. Unless of course he ruined 2 RAV4, oh wait that was the camry....

My yaris has 25K on it and has a tensioner that likes to stick constantly as did the wifes rav 4. Traded the rav for the subaru, Dont know without a teardown for sure what happened to the rav, but it had severe piston slap, power loss and oil usage - then the water pump started to leak so this sealed its fate. Traded at around 67K miles. I posted the VIN# for those who want to check service history on the thing. The rav was serviced primarily by the Toyota service center and got "toyota genuine motor oil" and thai denso filters. On the two OC I did on the car it got mclean5000 5w30 and japan denso OEM filter. So it either engine or gas or oil problems? You pick one.

I suspect the dealer put 5w20 in on an OC, but never did a used oil analysis. Dumb donkeys probably misread the TSB thinking they could "back spec" the 2azfe to 20w viscosity. The Bulletin says NO; "use what the oil cap reads" except you can use ILSAC GF4 in North America.

What does oil have to do with a leaking water pump, which is not lubed by the oil and is driven by an external belt? And the piston slap too, there are no squirters on these engines, that has nothing to do with oil. Now power loss and oil useage, that would indicate a problem but considering the vast amount of these engines, it seems more likely to me that it's a defect in your unit, than a failure of all 5-20 motor oil. I mean, take a look out the window the next time you're driving. Consider the numbers.

So twice we have an engine that's completely dead, but manages to propel the vehicle fine.... and you were able to trade it in so obviously it wasn't that bad.

I don't blame you for not liking Toyota, but to blame the oil is ridiculous.

Maybe the 5w30 in your neck of the woods is the wimpy stuff that we had over a decade ago. Toukin dinoz, of course.

Oil can have a direct affect on piston slap. Squirters are primarily used for piston cooling, not lube. Pistons, cylinders, and rings are lubed by oil regardless of how it gets there.

Oil can affect piston/bore wear. And it can make it quieter or louder once the slap is there.

strewth. so a synthetic 5w30 of brand X Y or Z should be apples?

My 2008 2AZ-FE is speced for 0w20 or 5w20. It gets Pennzoil Platinum or Quaker State Q Horsepower 5w20. I am wondering if I can run it on 5w30 in the Summer.
