Why is paper better

If we're talking about thousands of pennies, then yes. I've read the prices people are paying for their OEM filters - and replacing them every 15-30k miles. That's their choice, of course. I'd rather keep the money.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong, but it would depend on where you live. If most of your driving is on blacktop roads, in a rainy climate where the dust and dirt get washed off regularly, then you might not be sucking in that much contamination.

But if you live in a dry climate, or drive on gravel very often, then a lot of that contamination will end up in your crankcase.

I think more than one of the experts here will tell you that good air filtration is more important than which oil filter you choose. IOW, pick a good air filter and not worry so much about the oil filter.

Lastly, I do not understand those who argue about how much money they've saved by not replacing paper air filters every 20k or 40k miles.

Your proof is where???????

I havent heard or at least not yet that a reuseable filter causes engine break down. I continue to use aftermarket filters...i have a AFE Pro Dry in both Jetta and Tacoma. Both run just fine.

Don't worry they are arguing about K&N filters. From every independent test I have seen AFE Pro-Dry filtration rate is on par with paper air filters because drum roll please...... It is a synthetic PAPER filter much like the Mobil one oil filter media. AFE Pro Dry do not need to be oiled just washed.

Guys, sorry to hijack this thread one moment, but PLEASE check out my links in AlanCanada's current thread about his FORD FOCUS ZERO MAINTENANCE AIR FILTER:

https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/weird-ford-focus-2007-air-filter.119850/

I listed a link to an SAE paper for his filter as well as an SAE paper that SHOWS "clogged air filters don't reduce fuel mileage.

Awesome stuff, IMO. Now..... Back to the K&N bash......

How scientific is that study? Not very, if at all.

i have this oil bible or something to that effect by david mann...it says that the worst air filter you can get is by using paper filter bec. it has far from the ideal of filtering air below .5micron.
i find it confusing, pls. can someone enlighten me on this.
