Why is M1 grease so messy?

Being possibly the #1 lubricant manufacturer in the world, why is M1 the only grease that reliably leaks on the shelves in stores? Couldn’t they do better? Am I wrong for assuming this is an issue?

Valvoline Crimson does this as well. I lay my grease gun on a shop rag to absorb the excess. It seems they all separate.

Your observation without a picture for context makes this discussion rather obtuse and one sided, but yes, all grease tubes eventually leak to a degree.

Tubs dont leak anywhere as much but my observation is the moly tub thats been in my ranch property workshop with no ac for over 20 years.

Would I buy a leaking tube off a shelf? Heck no. Does a retail store care? Probably not.

My experience over the years with M1 grease is tat it separated quite a bit over a reasonably short period of time in my grease gun. I always had to store the gun in a plastic bin with some rags underneath. I figured if it does that in the grease gun, what is it doing in the things that I grease with it? I changed to other greases because of this.

So has it been discussed for 20 years, or has nobody else noticed? Interesting responses in this thread.
What are you after - a couple brands/types that don’t?
Red N Tacky and Mystik green tube stay together …
(Both hold up to water very well…)

Just an understanding of why it’s that way…

Makes my wonder if its leaking because there is a higher oil content compared to the thickener or if somehow the thickener doesn't hold the oil in suspension well. Kind of two sides to the same coin but very opposite scenarios.

Yep, my experience as well. I stopped using it because it continually leaked out of the gun.

The only other grease I had that leaked was some Chevron Duralith..... if that's what it was called.... mind you its took 10 years of the tube sitting before it leaked. The Mobil leaked as soon as I looked at it.

M1 is the only grease I've had leak out of the gun , even with the plunger pulled back.

I switched away from M1. But when that much oil leaks out, does the soap have enough oil to be an effective grease ?

I was afraid to use M1 after almost a 1/8 cup leaked from my gun, with the plunger back. I've never had any other brand leak like that.

Is the remaining grease good? Or is it now soap without enough oil to be effective?
